UPDATE: The holiday shopping season is officially here, and local businesses are urging shoppers to buy local NOW amid economic uncertainties. Independent shops across Los Angeles, including Creature’s Plants & Coffee in Eagle Rock, are rolling out exclusive in-store specials today for Small Business Saturday.
Owner Hope Creature describes her nursery as a vital community hub, stating, “We’re here to bring people together to explore, learn, and connect.” However, many local retailers are facing challenges, with concerns over tariffs and recent economic shifts affecting customer behavior.
At Highlow Gift Shop in Torrance, owner Sonya Gallardo shared, “I waited a long time to place my orders due to all the tariff uncertainty. Customers are also being cautious.”
Consumer foot traffic is critical. Owner Christina Mullin of Miracle Mile Toys & Gifts noted, “I’m happy for the street traffic, and I’m hoping that the holidays will provide the boost we need.”
Meanwhile, Jasa Cocke, owner of Marz on Mission Street in South Pasadena, expressed a more optimistic outlook, stating, “Business has been steady with our repeat customers.”
Despite sluggish sales since September, Jill Pearson of Hömage in Pasadena remains confident in the community’s support, saying, “It’s hard to resist spreading joy during the holidays.” Local shopping not only sustains businesses but also strengthens community ties, especially after recent adversity.
With many local artists and vendors impacted by recent fires, the importance of supporting local businesses has never been more urgent. Shoppers are encouraged to make a conscious effort to visit local shops rather than crowded malls, with many stores now offering unique gifts that contribute to the local economy.
