UPDATE: The Los Angeles Lakers are set to unveil a statue honoring former coach Pat Riley on February 22, 2024, during a highly anticipated matchup against the Boston Celtics. This momentous occasion celebrates Riley’s legendary contributions to the franchise, joining the ranks of basketball icons such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant in bronze outside the team’s downtown arena.
The statue will be unveiled as the Lakers honor their historic rivalry with the Celtics, making the event even more significant. Riley, who led the team during its famed “Showtime” era from 1981 to 1990, secured four NBA championships (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988) while amassing an impressive record of 533 wins against just 194 losses (.733) over his nine seasons at the helm.
Riley’s tenure included at least 50 wins in each of his seasons, with an extraordinary run of 60 wins in five consecutive seasons. He was recognized as the NBA Coach of the Year in 1989-90, solidifying his legacy in Lakers history.
Not only a coach, but Riley also played for the Lakers from 1970 to 1975 and served as a broadcaster before stepping into coaching. He was part of the legendary 1971-72 team that captured a league-record 33 consecutive victories and won the NBA championship.
At 80 years old, Riley continues to influence the game, currently serving as the president of the Miami Heat after coaching them to another championship in 2006. His recent honor at the Heat’s arena, where the court was named after him, reflects the deep respect he commands across the league.
The upcoming statue unveiling will make Riley the eighth Lakers legend to be immortalized in Star Plaza, a popular destination for fans. Other honorees include Abdul-Jabbar, Johnson, Bryant, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Shaquille O’Neal, and broadcaster Chick Hearn.
As the date approaches, excitement builds among Lakers fans and basketball enthusiasts alike, eager to witness this historic tribute to one of the sport’s greatest figures. Stay tuned for further updates as the event draws near!
