UPDATE: The L.A. Times has just announced the top 10 holiday cookie recipes in their revived Holiday Cookie Bake-Off. Over 150 recipes were submitted from across Southern California, creating a buzz among baking enthusiasts just in time for the festive season.
Judges, including L.A. Times journalists, tasted and evaluated the cookies prepared by 25 finalists from the culinary arts program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. The competition was fierce, showcasing a diverse array of flavors and traditions that reflect the holiday spirit.
Among the standout recipes is a mini version of stollen by local French teacher, who adds a California twist with candied clementines from her neighbor’s tree. “I’ve never had any issues with making stollen,” she shared, emphasizing the joy of sharing her creations with friends during her annual cookie exchange.
Another notable entry comes from professional baker Hagen, who recalls baking cookies with his grandmother in Granada Hills. His love for baking has grown into a grand tradition where he now creates a sprawling holiday cookie board, featuring up to 25 different cookies. “This cookie is what made me fall in love with cardamom,” Hagen revealed, highlighting the emotional connection behind his recipes.
Galindo, who recently launched her micro-bakery Tender Batch, put a seasonal twist on traditional whoopie pies by incorporating freshly roasted sweet potatoes. “I like cakey cookies that are warm and spicy,” she said, showcasing her innovation and passion for flavor.
