Korens Cleared in Trade Secrets Case Against SNT Motiv

BREAKING: South Korean auto parts manufacturer Korens and its affiliate Korens EM have been officially cleared of all charges in a protracted trade secrets dispute with rival SNT Motiv. The Busan District Prosecutors’ Office confirmed the ruling today, stating no evidence of wrongdoing was found after a thorough investigation.

The legal battle, which began in February 2022, saw SNT Motiv accuse Korens of illicitly acquiring proprietary technologies and poaching employees. However, the prosecutors’ decision echoes an earlier conclusion reached by the Busan Metropolitan Police in October 2022, which found no criminal liability for Korens.

“The inconsistent timeline suggests SNT Motiv sought to use legal action and media pressure to block its smaller rivals’ entry into a new market,” said a spokesperson for Korens. The allegations were first made public via a press release, but Korens contended that the employees in question had left SNT Motiv years earlier, well before the accusations surfaced.

Korens further criticized SNT Motiv for failing to provide substantial evidence to back its claims, leading to nearly a year of investigation. Authorities had repeatedly requested more information from SNT Motiv to substantiate its allegations.

As part of this ongoing saga, former and current executives at SNT Motiv are now reportedly under investigation for potentially filing false accusations, a serious offense under South Korean law if proven.

Korens emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property but cautioned against its misuse by dominant players to suppress competition. The company stated, “We suffered significant tangible and intangible damage during this period,” highlighting lost business opportunities and halted development partnerships as direct consequences of the reputational harm inflicted by the allegations.

This ruling marks a significant turning point in a dispute that has not only affected the companies involved but has also raised broader questions about the use of trade secret laws in the competitive landscape of the auto parts industry.

As the dust settles, industry observers are closely monitoring the situation for any further developments, particularly regarding the ongoing investigations into SNT Motiv’s executives. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding story.
