UPDATE: The Korea Entertainment Management Association (KEMA) has just announced urgent demands for clarity from former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin regarding serious allegations tied to the popular K-Pop group NewJeans. In a statement issued on October 3, 2023, KEMA highlighted that recent media reports about alleged contract tampering threaten the integrity of South Korea’s entertainment industry.
The Sanctions Committee of KEMA expressed grave concerns, stating, “This issue seriously threatens the foundation and trust system of South Korea’s popular culture and arts industry.” They emphasized that such disputes should never occur in an industry built on trust and ethical competition.
KEMA specifically addressed reports suggesting that Min Hee Jin may have interfered with the contracts of NewJeans, declaring, “If these reports are true, such actions would undermine the sound morals and development of the entertainment industry.” The committee demanded that Min Hee Jin provide a clear explanation and, if confirmed, take full responsibility along with an official apology.
Currently, ADOR is pursuing legal action against Min Hee Jin and NewJeans member Danielle, seeking damages of approximately ₩43.1 billion KRW (around $29.6 million USD) for alleged contract breaches. Danielle has already appointed legal representatives and is preparing to respond directly in court.
KEMA further clarified that the ongoing legal dispute between HYBE and Min Hee Jin should not be trivialized as a mere personal or financial conflict. “If swept under the rug, it could deter new initiatives and investments in the K-entertainment industry,” they warned, stressing that it could destabilize existing contracts and trust.
The Sanctions Committee vowed that their response would prioritize maintaining industry order and social conventions, ensuring that public interests are safeguarded. They reiterated the necessity of thoroughly investigating the tampering allegations surrounding NewJeans to foster a healthier environment for cultural and artistic workers in South Korea.
As this situation develops, the entertainment community and fans alike are watching closely to see how KEMA’s demands will be addressed and what implications this will have for the future of NewJeans and the broader industry. The call for accountability from KEMA adds significant pressure on Min Hee Jin, who faces scrutiny amid a turbulent backdrop of legal challenges and industry ethics.
