Josh Naylor Signs Five-Year Deal with Seattle Mariners

UPDATE: Josh Naylor has officially signed a five-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, reuniting the team with one of the top free agent bats available this offseason. This urgent development was confirmed by sources to ESPN, marking it as the first major signing of baseball’s offseason.

Naylor, 28 years old, made a significant impact upon joining the Mariners at the trade deadline, showcasing his abilities both offensively and defensively. His arrival solidified a first base position that had previously been a weakness for Seattle. The Mariners targeted Naylor as their top offseason priority, and his performance has been nothing short of impressive.

In just 54 games with Seattle, Naylor posted a batting average of .299 with nine home runs, 33 RBIs, and an impressive 19 stolen bases out of 19 attempts. His offensive prowess contributed to the Mariners reaching the Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, a significant achievement for the franchise.

Naylor’s five-year deal is pending a physical, but it further strengthens a Seattle roster that includes AL MVP runner-up Cal Raleigh and star center fielder Julio Rodriguez. This core is determined to push the Mariners toward their first-ever World Series appearance.

The new contract highlights Naylor’s remarkable season, where he combined his time with the Mariners and the Arizona Diamondbacks to hit .295 with 20 home runs and 92 RBIs, achieving a career-high 3.1 WAR. Known for his aggressive hitting and excellent contact skills, Naylor ranked in the top 20 for lowest strikeout rate among qualified batters.

What sets Naylor apart is not just his hitting skills but also his speed on the basepaths. Despite being one of the slowest runners in the majors, he achieved an astonishing 30-for-32 record in stolen bases, showcasing his strategic prowess. Naylor’s ability to steal bases while maintaining a solid average defense at first base has made him an invaluable asset to the Mariners.

Originally drafted by the Miami Marlins in the first round as the 12th overall pick in 2015, Naylor has carved out a notable career with 104 home runs and 435 RBIs over his seven seasons, appearing in four postseasons. His journey in baseball is also marked by family ties, as he is the oldest of three brothers who play professionally.

With this signing, the Mariners are poised to continue their upward trend in the league and remain a formidable contender for the upcoming season. As fans eagerly await the new season, all eyes will be on how Naylor integrates into this promising lineup.
