UPDATE: Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum took a significant step in his recovery, participating in his first 5-on-5 scrimmage since tearing his right Achilles in May 2023. However, he cautioned that this does not imply an imminent return to the court.
Tatum joined practice with the Celtics’ G League affiliate in Maine on Tuesday and expressed optimism, stating he was “feeling good” following the session. “Today is 39 weeks since the Achilles tear, so it’s been a long journey,” Tatum told reporters. “It’s just the progression of rehab; this was the next step. Doesn’t mean that I’m coming back or I’m not. We’re just following the plan.”
This injury, suffered during the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, typically requires up to a full year for recovery. When pressed about his return, Tatum admitted he remains uncertain. “I just feel a little bit better every day, and I just try and focus on that,” he stated.
Despite Tatum’s absence, the Celtics are thriving, currently holding the third position in the Eastern Conference, largely thanks to All-Star Jaylen Brown‘s performance. Tatum recently opened up about a concern he has regarding team chemistry upon his return. “I know what I bring to the table and what I’ll bring to the team, but I’m also aware these guys have been playing extremely well,” he reflected. “It was just kind of being vulnerable, I guess, for a moment.”
Celtics president Brad Stevens emphasized the need for caution, stating last week that it’s crucial for Tatum to be “110% healthy” before making his return. “That’s it. That’s the objective, and that’s what we’re going to stick with,” Stevens confirmed.
Fans and analysts alike are eager to see Tatum back on the court, but for now, the focus remains on his recovery and the Celtics’ impressive performance without their star player. Stay tuned for more updates as Tatum continues his rehabilitation process.
