UPDATE: Honda is urgently recalling over 400,000 vehicles in the United States due to a critical safety risk involving accessory wheels that may detach while driving. The affected models are the Honda Civic from model years 2016 to 2021, with the recall announced following a serious manufacturing error identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The specific part under scrutiny is the 18-inch aluminum alloy wheel, sold as an accessory. Although Honda estimates only 3,276 units had these wheels installed, the potential for wheels to come loose poses an alarming risk of crashes or injuries, particularly at high speeds.
Honda has confirmed that the issue stems from a manufacturing flaw by the supplier, where the steel lug seat inserts may not have been properly installed. This defect can lead to deformation of the lug nut seating surface, resulting in wheel nuts becoming loose and eventually detaching.
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to take immediate action. Honda dealerships will conduct inspections free of charge and will replace any defective accessory wheels at no cost to the owner. The automaker has assured that there have been no reports of injuries or crashes directly linked to this issue.
Notifications will be sent out to affected owners by December 8, 2025, and vehicle owners can verify if their car is impacted by searching the NHTSA.gov website for specific Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), effective immediately.
This recall follows recent news of significant recalls from Toyota, impacting thousands of vehicles due to engine and camera defects, highlighting ongoing safety challenges in the automotive industry.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops. It is crucial for Honda Civic owners to remain vigilant and act promptly to ensure their safety on the road.
