URGENT UPDATE: A heroic rescue unfolded just before midnight on Thanksgiving in Larchmont, Los Angeles, as an off-duty paramedic and a neighbor joined forces to save a young girl from a devastating house fire. The dramatic incident, captured on video, highlights the bravery of those who acted swiftly amidst the chaos of flames and falling embers.
The fire ignited near a two-story duplex on West Oakwood Avenue, sending thick smoke and burning debris into the air. Local resident Ari Vokydis described the terrifying scene: “I heard what sounded like a snowstorm, like snow hitting the window. I looked up, and it was ash. It was all sort of bright red outside.” Recognizing the immediate danger, Vokydis quickly alerted his family and rushed to help his neighbors.
Inside the duplex, 7-year-old Savannah Vasquez was already awake, waiting for her mother’s return. Initially confused by the heat and noise, Savannah recalled the fire safety messages she had learned at school. “I told my grandma that there was fire, and she went to go alert everybody at the house,” she said, showcasing her quick thinking under pressure.
As the flames spread, Richard, an off-duty paramedic, spotted the blaze from his home and rushed to the scene. “That guy just came out of nowhere, and then I was there, and then he helped me get out of the fire,” Savannah explained. Video footage reveals the dramatic moment Richard carried Savannah to safety through the chaos, with ash and embers raining down around them.
Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to extinguish the flames, which had already caused extensive damage, including the destruction of the family’s vehicle. Fortunately, the property was not condemned, allowing the Vasquez family to remain in their home. Savannah’s grandmother humorously referred to the car’s condition, saying, “Grandma’s car is now like a marshmallow.”
Despite suffering minor burns and blisters on her feet from the hot debris, Savannah expressed gratitude for the rescue and the support she received. “It’s really kind, because that’s what kind people do,” she said, highlighting the community’s spirit in the face of adversity.
As investigations continue, firefighters have yet to determine the cause of the fire. The Vasquez family, however, is counting their blessings this Thanksgiving, grateful to be alive and safe.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of fire safety and community support. As more details unfold, local authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and prepared for any emergencies.
