URGENT UPDATE: On January 29, 2024, the Visually Impaired People Organization, Inc. (V.I.P.) and Selma’s Primary Eye Care kicked off Glaucoma Awareness Month with a critical event providing free eye screenings. Hundreds flocked to the clinic, urging community members to prioritize their eye health.
During this impactful event, Dr. Kristina Lovinggood conducted eye pressure tests on 20-25 individuals. The turnout was the best yet, according to V.I.P. CEO and President William Bowman, who has collaborated with Dr. Lovinggood for these screenings since 2015. “I’m just glad that people took time out of their day to get an eye screening,” Bowman stated.
Disturbingly, 10-15 attendees were instructed to return for follow-up appointments due to elevated eye pressure, a potential sign of glaucoma. The eye pressure test, known as tonometry, measures fluid pressure inside the eye, making early detection vital. “Once you have a serious visual impairment, your life drastically changes,” Bowman emphasized.
The significance of these screenings extends beyond glaucoma detection; they can also reveal other serious health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancers. This underscores the need for regular eye exams, especially for those at risk.
Local officials, including Selma Mayor Johnny Moss III and Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, attended to present proclamations officially declaring January as Glaucoma Awareness Month in Selma and Dallas County. Their presence highlights the community’s commitment to health awareness.
Bowman is hopeful this event will inspire even more residents to get screened. “Even if you weren’t able to make it to this event, still give Dr. Lovinggood a call to get scheduled for a screening,” he urged. Primary Eye Care is located at 2401 Medical Center Parkway in Selma.
As the month progresses, the urgency to address eye health cannot be overstated. With glaucoma being a leading cause of blindness worldwide, awareness and early intervention are crucial. Stay informed and proactive—your vision could depend on it!
