BREAKING: Four-star basketball prospect Maximo Adams has just announced his commitment to the University of North Carolina, marking a significant milestone as the Tar Heels’ first recruit for the 2026 class. The announcement came on Friday, igniting excitement among fans and the basketball community.
“I’m extremely excited to put on and represent the Carolina blue,” Adams stated. The 6-foot-7 forward from Sierra Canyon High School in California expressed his admiration for the Tar Heel legacy, saying, “Being in the Dean Dome and seeing all those jerseys hanging up in the rafters, it’s a place built on legacy, and that’s something I admire a lot.”
Adams’ commitment concludes a highly competitive recruitment process involving some of college basketball’s top programs, including Michigan State, Kentucky, and Texas. Although Carolina was not perceived as the frontrunner for much of the recruitment, a pivotal visit in late October shifted the momentum in their favor.
“I chose North Carolina because of my relationship with the coaching staff and the players,” Adams revealed. He praised Tar Heels head coach Hubert Davis for his personal approach, stating that Davis often reached out to check on his well-being beyond basketball discussions.
Adams emerged as one of the standout players in last spring and summer’s grassroots basketball circuit, particularly on the Nike EYBL, where he averaged 18.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists for Team Why Not and Vegas Elite. He showcased his scoring ability with three separate 30-point games, including a remarkable 38-point, 17-rebound performance against Team Takeover in May.
With his versatility as a hybrid forward, Adams excels in scoring from mid-range, driving effectively against defenders, and making swift, accurate passes. His skill set aligns with the traditional strengths of UNC basketball, reminiscent of former Tar Heel star Harrison Ingram, known for his 3-point shooting.
Adams is not only the first commitment for UNC in 2026 but also the twelfth recruit from the SC Next 100 since 2022, signifying the program’s ongoing strength in attracting top-tier talent. The Tar Heels are also hosting five-star point guard Dylan Mingo for an official visit this weekend, aiming to further bolster their roster.
As excitement builds around Adams’ commitment, he looks forward to engaging with the supportive Tar Heel fan base. “I look forward to meeting everyone on the campus,” he said, emphasizing the strong community surrounding the program.
