Ferrari’s Vasseur Explains Controversial Team Orders at Azerbaijan GP

UPDATE: Tensions flared at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur addressed the controversial team orders involving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc during the final lap. Just moments ago, Vasseur revealed crucial details about the mix-up that has left fans and drivers buzzing.

As the race neared its end on September 19, 2025, Hamilton was instructed to let Leclerc pass, despite the fact that he was on fresher medium tires. “Let Charles by, he’s one and a half seconds behind you,” Hamilton’s race engineer, Riccardo Adami, stated over the radio, indicating that the team believed Hamilton could overtake both Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson ahead.

Vasseur confirmed that the decision was made due to Hamilton’s tire advantage: “We asked Charles to let him go to try to overtake Lawson and Tsunoda or Norris,” he explained. However, complications arose when Ferrari later requested Hamilton to relinquish the position back to Leclerc.

In a twist, Hamilton misjudged the timing on the track. “I got the message really late on and was zoned in on the car in front of me,” he admitted. Despite slowing down, he could not allow Leclerc to pass, ultimately finishing in eighth place while Leclerc followed closely behind. “That was just a misjudgment by myself. I’ll apologize to Charles,” Hamilton stated after the chaotic finish.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix results saw Max Verstappen take the win, followed by George Russell and Carlos Sainz. The Ferrari team, with both drivers finishing in the lower ranks, is now left to assess the implications of their strategic decisions.

This incident raises questions about team dynamics and the pressure drivers face in high-stakes situations. Fans and analysts are eager to see how Ferrari will adjust their approach moving forward as they prepare for the upcoming races.
