URGENT UPDATE: This weekend, Newark Market Place transformed into a festive hub as local farmers spread holiday cheer by gifting over 150 children with supplies for Rudolph. The event, titled “Carrots for Rudolph,” took place on December 20 from 10 AM to 1 PM, coinciding with last-minute Christmas shopping.
Farmers from surrounding areas including Newark, Farnsfield, Southwell, Kelham, and Sutton-on-Trent brought a tractor and trailer brimming with fresh goodies. Families flocked to the market, eager to collect bags of washed carrots and hay for Santa’s reindeer.
County NFU chairman Oliver Collingham of Combs Farm expressed his delight, stating, “It was a really lovely day. From minute one, we had children and parents wanting to take a carrot and hay for the reindeer, so much so we had to get more carrier bags from a neighboring market stall.”
During the three-hour event, farmers engaged with the community, allowing children to climb aboard the tractor and inquire about farming. “Many of the children sat on the tractor and wanted to ask various questions about farming,” Oliver added. The initiative not only provided festive fun but also educated the public on the importance of supporting British agriculture.
This year marks the second annual giveaway, inspired by a similar event in Staffordshire. Oliver noted, “It’s something we’ll be looking to repeat or find ways to improve to make it an even lovelier experience in the future.” The success of this event suggests a growing trend in community-driven agricultural outreach.
As families prepare for Christmas Day, they can take pride in knowing that the high-quality British food enjoyed will also benefit Santa’s reindeer. The joy and excitement were palpable, making it a memorable experience for the people of Newark and surrounding areas.
Stay tuned for more updates as the farmers plan to expand this festive tradition, bringing communities together through agriculture and holiday spirit.
