ElevenLabs CEO Reveals Non-Traditional Hiring Boosts Talent Pool

UPDATE: ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski has unveiled a groundbreaking approach to hiring that is reshaping the AI audio startup landscape. In a recent podcast with A16z, Staniszewski emphasized that his company is “very against” traditional hiring practices, specifically targeting talent outside the confines of platforms like LinkedIn.

The urgency of this announcement comes as ElevenLabs recently achieved a staggering $6.6 billion valuation, prompting the need for innovative hiring strategies. Staniszewski revealed that their non-traditional approach has led to the discovery of “very interesting” employees, including a remarkable researcher who was working at a call center while developing an open-source text-to-speech model.

“We hired a person that had incredible open source text-to-speech model, and was working in the call center at the same time,” Staniszewski stated. “He’s now on the team, one of the most brilliant researchers we have doing all the data processing.” This revelation underscores the potential of untapped talent outside the traditional tech hubs of San Francisco and the West Coast.

Staniszewski’s insights into the hiring process highlight the company’s commitment to sourcing talent globally. “We started initially in Europe, and we realized that if we wanted the best people to solve what was a research problem at the time, we need to hire wherever they are,” he explained. The co-founders, originally from Poland, recognized early on the limitations of regional hiring, which inspired their focus on the European and Asian talent pools.

As ElevenLabs expands, the company is coupling remote work options with physical offices in major cities including New York, London, Tokyo, and Bangalore. Staniszewski noted that this hybrid approach fosters a stronger company culture and allows new employees to immerse themselves in the organization.

The company’s culture is evolving as well; last year, ElevenLabs eliminated job titles to promote a flat organizational structure. “The moment you join, you can have any impact on the company,” Staniszewski said, emphasizing how this dynamic empowers employees to rise quickly based on their contributions.

Staniszewski’s strategy also includes streamlining communication to enhance focus among team members. “If you put a person into all the Slack channels and give them transparency, they actually get frequently distracted,” he explained. This insight reflects a growing understanding of how to optimize productivity in a remote work environment.

The implications of ElevenLabs’ new hiring strategy resonate beyond the company, signaling a shift in how tech startups may approach talent acquisition in the future. As the company continues to attract top talent and scale its operations, the industry will be watching closely for further developments.

For those following the tech landscape, this innovative approach to hiring could redefine how organizations source talent and build teams. ElevenLabs is not just finding employees; they are discovering untapped potential in unlikely places, a trend that could inspire other companies to rethink their hiring practices.

Stay tuned for more updates as ElevenLabs continues to make waves in the AI audio sector, setting new standards for how talent is identified and nurtured.
