UPDATE: Dwayne Johnson has revealed the intense transformation he underwent to portray MMA legend Mark Kerr in the highly anticipated film “The Smashing Machine,” set to release this Friday. Johnson described a grueling preparation process that involved gaining 30 pounds, extensive training, and a deep emotional connection to the character.
During a recent media roundtable, Johnson shared how his portrayal of Kerr resonated deeply with the MMA pioneer. After watching the film, Kerr’s son, Bryce, called his father in tears, saying, “Dad, he walks like you. He looks like you. He talks like you.” This emotional validation underscores the significance of Johnson’s transformation.
The film’s release comes on the heels of Johnson’s busy schedule, including his first WWE match in 11 years. Johnson dedicated a month to a rigorous training camp specifically for this role, engaging in a demanding routine that included early morning cardio, weightlifting, and MMA training.
Johnson’s commitment was evident, as he spent three to four hours daily in makeup, applying 21 prosthetics to achieve Kerr’s look, crafted by Academy Award winner Kazu Hiro. His performance has garnered critical acclaim, with many calling it one of his best to date.
Director Benny Safdie emphasized his respect for the original documentary, aiming to create a film that honored Kerr’s legacy while exploring deeper emotional themes. Johnson expressed his desire to pay tribute to friends lost to the struggles of the wrestling and MMA worlds, stating, “I wanted to write my own love letter to the men who were my friends that I lost.”
The physical transformation was no small feat. Johnson worked closely with Safdie to adjust his physique, ultimately realizing he needed to put on significant muscle. “I had to get bigger… puffier,” Johnson recalled, leading to a decision to gain weight through a specialized training regimen.
Beginning his training in April 2024, Johnson immersed himself in the world of MMA, training with professional fighters to ensure authenticity in his movements. Safdie encouraged Johnson to perform his own stunts for fight scenes, which resulted in a physically demanding shoot where Johnson even took real punches to enhance the film’s realism.
“I know what that meant,” Johnson commented, highlighting his dedication to portraying Kerr authentically.
The film also delves into the personal struggles of Kerr, including his tumultuous relationship with ex-wife Dawn Staples, played by Emily Blunt. Safdie approached these scenes with care, fostering a trusting environment for the actors to explore their characters’ vulnerabilities. Johnson described the emotional scenes as “raw” and “intense,” reflecting his own childhood experiences.
As the release date approaches, Johnson’s transformation and emotional depth are capturing the attention of audiences and critics alike. His performance not only pays tribute to Kerr but also highlights the broader struggles faced by athletes in high-pressure environments. This connection is what makes “The Smashing Machine” a must-watch for fans of both Johnson and the MMA world.
With the film premiering soon, it promises to deliver a powerful narrative that resonates well beyond the screen, marking a significant moment in Johnson’s career and a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those in combat sports.
