UPDATE: The annual MLK Classic at Monroe High School showcased an intense day of basketball on January 15, 2024, featuring thrilling victories for both Dougherty and Monroe. In a nail-biting opener, Dougherty edged out Valdosta with a final score of 46-44, while the No. 7-ranked Monroe Golden Tornadoes secured a 68-58 win over Early County.
The day’s schedule faced a slight hiccup when the highly anticipated matchup between Lee County and Bible Baptist (Statesboro) was canceled due to transportation issues. Despite this setback, Monroe head coach Michael Hoffpauir expressed satisfaction with the event’s competitive spirit. “The day went well,” Hoffpauir commented. “I think we had great matchups that made each game competitive.”
The MLK Classic, organized by Monroe’s basketball program and booster club, commenced with girls’ games before transitioning to the boys’ matches. Dougherty’s victory came after a fierce battle against Valdosta. The game started with Valdosta’s Jake Reid hitting a corner three-pointer, quickly met by Dougherty’s Mikel Roberts, who also landed a three. The teams exchanged baskets, but Dougherty managed to hold a slim 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Dougherty began to pull away in the second quarter, with Roberts sinking another three-pointer, followed by freshman Ernest Townsell, pushing their lead to 20-14. The Trojans went into halftime ahead 29-18 and extended their lead to 36-18 with a commanding start to the third quarter.
Valdosta rallied back after a timeout, narrowing the gap to 38-31 by the end of the third quarter. The Wildcats tied the game at 42-42 with just over three minutes remaining. However, Dougherty’s David Burgess regained the lead with a crucial basket, followed by a free throw that sealed the win. The Trojans improved their record to 8-9, with Roberts leading the team with 10 points.
Monroe capped off the boys’ segment of the day by defeating Early County 68-58. The Golden Tornadoes jumped to a strong start, leading 14-4 at the end of the first quarter. Tristen Terry ignited the second quarter with a three-pointer, followed by a steal and layup, extending their lead to 19-4. Despite Monroe’s significant lead, Early County mounted a challenge, cutting the deficit to ten multiple times.
Every time Early County threatened, Monroe responded, particularly through drives from Terry and buckets from leading scorer Brayden Burns, who finished the game with 26 points. Terry added 17 points and Robert Adams contributed 12 points. Early County’s best performer was Tre Lee, with 15 points.
Despite the canceled game, the MLK Classic delivered thrilling basketball and showcased emerging talent, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. As the event wraps up, all eyes will be on both Dougherty and Monroe as they prepare for upcoming matchups, eager to continue their winning momentum.
