Dodgers Name Roki Sasaki ‘Primary Option’ as Closer Amid NLDS

UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers have identified Roki Sasaki as their “primary option” for the closer role, according to manager Dave Roberts. This announcement comes amid the crucial National League Division Series (NLDS) against the Philadelphia Phillies, with Game 3 set for tomorrow, October 11, 2023, at Dodger Stadium.

Sasaki’s emergence as the main closer is significant, but Roberts cautioned that his usage will depend on the team’s workload and the need to secure victories. “We have to win X amount of games [to secure a championship], and he’s not going to close every game,” Roberts emphasized, highlighting the importance of strategic bullpen management as the postseason unfolds.

In the tense Game 2 of the NLDS, the Dodgers experienced a rocky ninth inning, where Blake Treinen allowed the first three batters to reach base, nearly giving up a three-run lead. Sasaki entered the game and successfully recorded the final out, marking just his fifth relief appearance since moving to the bullpen in mid-September. His performance is a beacon of hope for the Dodgers, who are navigating a postseason fraught with challenges.

The Dodgers’ bullpen has faced scrutiny, especially with injuries impacting key pitchers such as Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates. Roberts acknowledged that while they have fallen out of favor, he may need to rely on them again as the series progresses. “If there’s a world where you can use five pitchers and finish a postseason and win, I think a lot of people would sign up for that,” he said, underscoring the unpredictability of playoff baseball.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are poised to respond with urgency, sending veteran right-hander Aaron Nola to the mound in Game 3. Nola, who had a challenging season with a record of 5-10 and a 6.01 ERA, is crucial to Philadelphia’s hopes of extending their playoff run. Manager Rob Thomson expressed confidence in Nola, citing a strong finish to the regular season as a key factor in his selection.

The stakes are high as the series shifts to Los Angeles. The Dodgers lead the NLDS 2-0, but the Phillies are determined to flip the script. Thomson’s decision to use Nola reflects a tactical shift, as lefty starter Ranger Suarez is also ready to step in for Game 4 if necessary. The Phillies’ lineup expects to face a formidable Dodgers offense, making every pitch crucial.

Additionally, center fielder Harrison Bader’s status remains uncertain following a hamstring strain. He is a “gametime decision,” which adds further tension to the Phillies’ lineup as they prepare for the critical matchup. If he is unable to play, adjustments will need to be made quickly.

On the Dodgers’ side, catcher Will Smith is still recovering from a hairline fracture in his right hand. Although he hasn’t started yet in the playoffs, he has caught key moments and could play a pivotal role in Game 3. Roberts indicated optimism about Smith’s condition, stating, “Each day, it’s gotten better,” hinting at a potential full-game return.

As the NLDS intensifies, all eyes will be on the Dodgers and Phillies. Fans are eagerly anticipating whether Sasaki can solidify his role as the closer, and if Nola can rise to the occasion in this high-stakes battle. With both teams aiming for postseason glory, the urgency to perform has never been higher.

Stay tuned for updates as the series unfolds and the drama continues to escalate!
