BREAKING: A catastrophic explosion at the Bristol Health & Rehab Center in Bristol, Pennsylvania has left two dead and at least 20 others hospitalized, including one in critical condition. The explosion occurred on October 24, 2023, shortly after a utility crew responded to reports of a gas odor at the facility, approximately 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia.
Authorities confirmed that the deceased were two women—one resident and one employee—though their identities have not yet been released. Bristol Police Chief Charles Winik stated that all residents accounted for during the rescue efforts, which involved multiple fire departments battling flames and smoke as they searched through the wreckage.
The explosion rattled the community, with eyewitness reports describing a loud boom that sounded like an aircraft crash. Local resident Willie Tye said, “I thought an airplane or something came and fell on my house.” Upon venturing outside, he witnessed “fire everywhere” and people fleeing the building.
Officials are now investigating the cause of the explosion, with a focus on a potential gas leak. PECO, the local gas utility, stated that it had shut off natural gas and electric service to the facility to protect responders and nearby residents. “It is not known at this time if PECO’s equipment, or natural gas, was involved in this incident,” the company reported.
Rescue operations were chaotic, with firefighters pulling people from collapsed sections of the building, stairwells, and even elevator shafts. Fire Chief Kevin Dippolito described the scene as “overwhelming,” with rescuers working under hazardous conditions, including a second explosion that added to the danger.
In addition to the immediate tragedy, the facility has a troubling history. State records reveal that the nursing home was cited for multiple violations during its last inspection in October 2023. These included failures to maintain proper safety measures, such as accurate floor plans and smoke barrier partitions. Moreover, the facility holds a “much below average” overall rating from Medicare, particularly for health inspections.
The nursing home had recently affiliated with Saber Healthcare Group, which expressed deep sorrow over the incident, labeling it “devastating.” The company emphasized that its staff had reported the gas odor to PECO before the explosion occurred.
As investigators from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission arrive on the scene, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of this disaster. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the explosion or those present at the facility to come forward as they continue their investigation.
The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as rescue and investigative efforts continue. Residents are urged to stay away from the area as authorities work diligently to ensure safety and assess the full scope of the disaster.
