Create Delicious Furikake Popcorn with This Easy Recipe

Furikake popcorn combines sweet and savory flavors for a unique snack experience. Inspired by a Japanese take on classic Chex Mix, this recipe transforms traditional kettle corn by incorporating furikake, a Japanese seasoning blend made from dried seaweed, sesame seeds, and spices. The idea emerged after the creator, Christine Gallary, experienced the delightful crunch of furikake-coated cereal, leading to the delicious concept of furikake popcorn.

Ingredients and Preparation

The recipe is designed for ease, making it accessible for both seasoned cooks and novices. By using pre-popped popcorn, the process becomes straightforward, eliminating the challenges of making kettle corn from scratch. The key ingredients include:

  • Furikake: A savory condiment that enhances the flavor of rice, fish, and noodle dishes.
  • Popcorn: Pre-popped corn is recommended, although microwave popcorn can also be used.
  • Unsalted butter: Provides a rich base for the caramel coating.
  • Granulated sugar: Adds sweetness while allowing other flavors to shine.
  • Baking soda: Lightens the texture of the caramel, ensuring an even coat.

To create this delightful snack, begin by preheating the oven to 250°F (approximately 121°C). Prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat, stirring in 1/2 cup of granulated sugar until moistened. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly for 3 minutes until it reaches a light maple syrup color.

Combining the Flavors

Once the caramel is ready, remove it from heat and carefully whisk in 1/4 teaspoon of fine salt and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. The mixture will bubble up; continue whisking until it becomes a thick, glossy sauce. Immediately drizzle this over 12 cups of plain popped popcorn while stirring continuously to ensure even coating. Lastly, sprinkle 3 tablespoons of furikake over the popcorn and stir until well mixed.

Transfer the coated popcorn to the prepared baking sheet and spread it into an even layer. Bake for about 30 minutes, stirring halfway through. To test for doneness, take a piece out of the oven, let it cool for 30 seconds, and check for crunchiness. Allow the furikake popcorn to cool for at least 5 minutes before serving, as it will continue to crisp up during this time.

This delightful popcorn can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days, making it a perfect snack for movie nights or casual gatherings. Its sweet and savory combination offers a sophisticated twist to traditional popcorn while remaining easy to prepare.

For those seeking a gluten-free version, it is important to check that the furikake used is gluten-free, as not all brands may meet this criterion. With its unique flavor profile and satisfying crunch, furikake popcorn is sure to be a hit among snack enthusiasts.

“The sweet-savory combo is perfect,” Gallary remarks, highlighting the versatility of this snack.
