Robert V. Richardson III, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026, at his home in Midlothian, Virginia. He was 81 years old. Known affectionately as Robbie, he leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family and community.
A Life Well-Lived
Born in Hampton, Virginia, to Barbara and Vollie Richardson, Robert was raised alongside his brother, Jimmy. The family spent many summers enjoying time at their cottage at Grand View Beach. He graduated from Christchurch School, where he received the prestigious Bishop’s Award. He furthered his education at the College of William and Mary before serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
After his military service, Robert attended Richmond Polytechnic Institute—now known as Virginia Commonwealth University—where he completed his degree. He married Martha Richardson and the couple spent over 53 years together, raising their two children, Mark and Sarah, in Poquoson, Virginia. Robert built their family home on Lyons Creek, creating countless memories with his children on the water.
A Career of Service and Achievement
Robert was a respected custom home builder, operating a successful general contracting business in the Tidewater area for two decades. Later in his career, he transitioned to a role as a program manager at Capital One, where he earned his PMP certification and an Advanced Project Management Certification from Stanford University. He ultimately retired from Wells Fargo, leaving a positive impact on many project managers he mentored throughout his career.
Beyond his professional achievements, Robert was known for his deep passion for travel, boating, fishing, and woodworking. A devoted fan of the New York Yankees, he maintained a vibrant sense of humor that endeared him to many. He is survived by his wife, children, son-in-law Chris Harrison, daughter-in-law Mara Richardson, and four grandchildren: Baker and Tucker Harrison, and Wilder and Annette Richardson. He also leaves behind his brother and sisters-in-law, Lynn Richardson and Mary Ellen Kestel.
Robert requested that those wishing to honor his memory consider making a donation to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. His impact on family and friends will be felt for years to come, as he was a source of love and encouragement throughout his life.
In a time of grief, the community remembers Robert V. Richardson III not just for his accomplishments, but for the warmth and joy he brought to those around him.
