URGENT UPDATE: A woman has been airlifted to a hospital following a deputy-involved shooting early this morning in Clearwater, Florida. The incident occurred at approximately 1:59 a.m. in the 2100 block of Capri Drive, prompting an immediate response from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Clearwater Police.
Authorities confirm that the woman, identified as 40-year-old Megan Ratcliffe, claimed to be armed with a handgun and concealed her hands inside a jacket. After receiving a 911 call reporting an unknown problem, deputies initially retreated to establish a safe perimeter while attempting to negotiate with her.
For about 18 minutes, deputies were unable to see Ratcliffe until she appeared in the roadway. Officers ordered her to show her hands, but as she advanced towards them, she suddenly pulled an object from her jacket. Investigators later determined this object was a cordless drill. In response, two deputies discharged their weapons, resulting in Ratcliffe suffering a single gunshot wound. Fortunately, no deputies were injured during the altercation.
Ratcliffe was airlifted by helicopter to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa. Her current condition remains undisclosed, but Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy stated that the situation appears to be a tragic case of “suicide by cop” after reviewing body-worn camera footage.
In line with standard procedure, the two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation by the Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigative Task Force, established to ensure independent oversight of such incidents.
This investigation is still developing, and authorities will release further information as it becomes available. The situation has raised significant concerns regarding mental health and the complexities faced by law enforcement in tense situations.
Stay tuned for updates on this critical incident as new details are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
