Cherokee Nation Celebrates 35 Years of Gaming Success Today

URGENT UPDATE: Today marks a significant milestone as the Cherokee Nation celebrates 35 years of transformative success in the gaming industry. What began as a modest bingo hall in Roland, Oklahoma, in 1990 has evolved into a major economic driver—Cherokee Nation Entertainment (CNE)—generating over $1 billion annually and employing more than 4,000 people.

The decision to establish CNE was rooted in a vision of self-determination and prosperity for the Cherokee community. Under the leadership of then-Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller, this bold initiative aimed to uplift the Cherokee people through job creation and community-focused revenue generation. Today, as Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr. reflects on this anniversary, he emphasizes that this achievement is not just a destination, but rather an ongoing commitment to prosperity for all tribal citizens.

CNE has expanded significantly since its inception, now operating 11 casinos, including full-service resorts with over 1,800 guest rooms, dining options, and entertainment venues. The growth of CNE has had a profound impact, attracting visitors and stimulating local economies throughout northeast Oklahoma.

“This success is not solely measured by revenue; it’s about what it means for our people and communities,” Chief Hoskin stated. “These jobs allow parents to support their families and provide opportunities for future generations.”

The gaming enterprise has also been a catalyst for broader economic development, including investments in essential infrastructure such as roads, health centers, and community facilities. The ripple effects of this growth have been felt across rural towns, enhancing the quality of life for countless families.

CNE’s contributions extend far beyond gaming. Since its founding, the business has returned over $1 billion in dividends to support critical government services, including education, housing, and healthcare. This financial stability is crucial for sustaining the tribe’s ongoing efforts in these vital areas.

As the Cherokee Nation looks to the future, the leadership remains committed to diversifying economic opportunities. Gaming is just one aspect of this vision, serving as a springboard for broader initiatives that promise enduring benefits for the Cherokee people.

On this landmark anniversary, the Cherokee Nation honors the visionaries who laid the groundwork for CNE’s success and acknowledges the dedicated staff who have made it a reality. The casinos are more than just venues; they are integral to the Cherokee identity and community.

With celebrations underway, the Cherokee Nation invites everyone to join in recognizing this remarkable journey and supporting future endeavors. To contribute to the ongoing success of the Cherokee community, the nation is encouraging donations to its year-end campaign.

This is a pivotal moment in the Cherokee Nation’s history, embodying the spirit of resilience and unity. As the party continues, the focus remains on what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.
