BREAKING: In a thrilling showdown, Camarillo High School has secured a 22-14 victory over Rio Mesa in the 51st Black and Blue rivalry game, thanks to a standout performance by senior running back Shane Feller. The game took place on August 29, 2023, and this win marks not only a pivotal moment for the Scorpions but also snaps a four-game losing streak against the Spartans.
Feller dominated the field, carrying the ball 32 times for 210 yards, scoring two touchdowns, and adding a two-point conversion. “I have just got to run aggressive,” Feller declared after the game, showcasing the determination that led his team to victory.
Camarillo (1-1) faced early adversity, fumbling on their first possession, allowing Rio Mesa’s Juan Munoz to score a quick touchdown. However, the Scorpions quickly rebounded with a tactical 16-play drive, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run from sophomore quarterback Dylan Nicholson to tie the game at 6-6.
The second quarter saw a flurry of missed opportunities for both teams, including a blocked punt by Rio Mesa and an interception thrown by Nicholson. As the quarter progressed, Camarillo orchestrated a stunning 79-yard drive, featuring a fake punt that kept the momentum on their side, allowing Feller to score again, bringing the score to 14-6.
Rio Mesa (0-2) managed to tie the game just before halftime with a goal-line keeper from quarterback Alec Fontyn, who completed 14 of 25 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Despite the tie at 14-14, Rio Mesa could not capitalize on their momentum in the second half.
The turning point came when Camarillo took the lead at 20-14 after another impressive drive. A safety, forced by Camarillo’s defense, sealed the Spartans’ fate, highlighting their inability to stop the run. Defensive back Carson Machado capped off the victory with a crucial interception in the closing moments of the game, showcasing the Scorpions’ defensive strength.
“I knew they were going to go deep with it,” Machado explained. “I saw the quarterback — right when he looked, I knew that was where he was going to throw.”
With this victory, Camarillo demonstrates not only their resilience but also their potential as they prepare to face Saugus next week at College of the Canyons. Meanwhile, Rio Mesa will look to regroup as they host Ventura.
Camarillo’s head coach Nate Anderson praised his team’s effort: “They battled, they competed.” As the season unfolds, the Scorpions will aim to build on this momentum, while the Spartans must address their offensive struggles to turn their season around.
Stay tuned for more developments as both teams continue their high school football journey.
