The Blandford Historical Society marked a significant moment in American history with a cannon salute and bonfire celebration on January 11, 2024. The event took place at the Blandford Fairgrounds to honor the arrival of Henry Knox‘s artillery train in Blandford during the American Revolutionary War. This expedition was a pivotal moment as it involved transporting 60 tons of captured cannons from Fort Ticonderoga in New York to the Continental Army located outside of Boston.
Members of the Historical Society gathered to remember the challenges faced by Knox and his team during their winter journey. The steepest descent occurred in Blandford, where the artillery train navigated the difficult terrain leading down into the Connecticut River Valley. Knox documented the arduous nature of the journey in his diary, marveling at the capabilities of his team: “It appeared to me almost a miracle that people with heavy loads should be able to get up and down such hills as are here.”
Community Engagement and Historical Reenactments
Despite the harsh winter conditions, Knox’s lead crew ultimately refused to continue their trek beyond Blandford due to inadequate snow and treacherous terrain. In a crucial moment, local resident Solomon Brown offered his assistance, providing teams of oxen to help transport the artillery down the notorious “Devil’s Staircase.” This collaboration underscored the community spirit and determination of Blandford residents during a critical time in American history.
The celebration included various activities designed to engage the community and foster a deeper understanding of this historical event. Attendees enjoyed donuts, hot chocolate, and cider while reenactors vividly depicted the story of the Knox Artillery Train and the heroic efforts of Solomon Brown. The event served not only as a tribute to the past but also as an opportunity for the community to come together and reflect on their heritage.
Through events like this, the Blandford Historical Society continues to preserve and share the rich history of the region. The cannon salute and bonfire celebration served as a reminder of the extraordinary challenges and accomplishments of those who played a role in shaping the nation’s history.
