John Matthew Mulkern, Jr., affectionately known as Jack, passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 83. A devoted father and grandfather, he was deeply rooted in his Boston heritage and cherished by family and friends alike.
Born as the only child to the late Mary (Molly) and John ‘Pat’ Mulkern, Jack grew up in Charlestown and Nahant. He proudly embraced his identity as a “Bunker Hillbilly,” reflecting his strong connection to the local community. His early years were marked by service and hard work; he served honorably for seven years in the United States Coast Guard while simultaneously pursuing education and working as a lobsterman off the coast of Gloucester.
Despite his love for the ocean, Jack found his true calling in psychology. He dedicated over three decades of his career to the Lowell Public School System, where he made a significant impact on the lives of countless students. Even after retirement, he continued his mission to support children, families, and individuals through his private practice.
Jack was known for his values of humor, honesty, integrity, hard work, and unwavering devotion to family. He shared a remarkable 55 years of marriage with his wife, Barbara, showcasing a partnership that exemplified loyalty and love.
He is survived by his daughters, Pamela Welch and Patrice Mulkern, along with son-in-law Chris Haney. His legacy extends to his grandchildren, Catherine and Jack, his brother-in-law Joseph ‘Joe’ Maggio, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will remember him fondly.
Services to honor Jack are scheduled for 11:00 AM on December 30, 2025, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Nahant, followed by a burial at Greenlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Hospital or the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club, reflecting Jack’s commitment to helping others.
Jack Mulkern’s life was a testament to the importance of community, service, and family, and his absence will be felt by many.
