James V. “Jim” Gearhart, an esteemed educator and community member, passed away on December 27, 2025, at the age of 80. He was a long-time resident of Fellowship Community in Whitehall, Pennsylvania, where he is remembered for his dedication to both his family and his career.
Born on May 15, 1945, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Jim was the son of the late Vernon and Elinor (Heck) Gearhart. He distinguished himself early on by being named Valedictorian of his graduating class at John Harris High School in Harrisburg. Following his academic achievements, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in history from Haverford College.
After 30 years of service, Jim retired as the Chief Budget Officer at Kutztown University. His professional journey reflected not only his expertise in budget management but also his commitment to education and the university community.
Jim’s interests extended beyond academics. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and vacationing at Stone Harbor, New Jersey. A passionate sports enthusiast, he also had a keen interest in photography. Jim’s community involvement was evident through his membership at Cedar Crest Bible Fellowship Church in Allentown.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carol (Mann) Gearhart, with whom he shared 48 years of marriage. Jim is also survived by his two daughters, Diana J. Blackford and her husband, Ty, of Sidney, Ohio, and Amy E. Wesner and her husband, Eric, of Bethel. He cherished his grandchildren, Simon, Anderson, and Eva Blackford, as well as Jamie and Paul Wesner. He was predeceased by his brother, John Gearhart.
A service to honor and celebrate Jim’s life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on January 3, 2026, at the Zentz Community Center located at 3000 Fellowship Drive, Whitehall, on the Fellowship Community campus. The ceremony will be officiated by Rev. Carl Fischer, Jr. Friends and family are invited to gather from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service to pay their respects.
Following the service, a private interment will take place at Laureldale Cemetery in Reading, Pennsylvania. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Heintzelman-Stephens Funeral Home, P.C.. Those wishing to express their condolences may do so online at www.heintzelmanstephens.com.
