Baltimore’s The Charmery: Ice Cream Shop Blends Art and Community

The Charmery, a beloved ice cream shop in Baltimore, has transformed from a simple indulgence into a cornerstone of the local community. Founded over a decade ago by David and Laura Alima, the shop is known for its innovative flavors and commitment to local collaboration. The Charmery embodies the spirit of Baltimore, serving as a gathering place that celebrates both culinary craftsmanship and artistic expression.

From Inspiration to Creation

Opened in 2014, The Charmery emerged from a shared dream of the Alimas. With Laura’s background in hospitality from Cornell University and David’s passion for making ice cream, the couple embarked on a journey to create a shop that resonates with their love for community. “Ice cream shops are kind of the heartbeat of a neighborhood,” David Alima remarked in a recent interview. His childhood in Baltimore inspired a desire to cultivate that sense of connection at home.

Traveling the globe, the Alimas sought inspiration from diverse cultures. One particularly memorable experience occurred in Vietnam, where they encountered a unique ice cream shop that allowed customers to drive their motorbikes inside. “The whole garage smelled like gasoline, and they served this sticky rice ice cream that I still think about,” said David. This memory sparked the creation of a mango sticky rice flavor at The Charmery, showcasing how travel shapes their culinary innovations.

At The Charmery, flavor development is a meticulous process. They produce super-premium ice cream with a butterfat content of 16 percent, sourced from South Mountain Creamery in Maryland. “If there’s fruit in a flavor, it’s real fruit,” David emphasized. The shop prides itself on using no artificial colorings or flavorings, ensuring that every ingredient listed is authentically included.

Creativity and Community Engagement

The Charmery stands out for its commitment to creativity and artistic collaboration. “We are inspired by pastry chefs and chefs here in Baltimore,” David Alima explained. Each week, the shop introduces a new flavor, allowing for continual innovation and exploration. This practice not only keeps the menu exciting but also fosters a sense of community among local artists, musicians, and creatives.

“The more art there is in the world, the better off we are,” noted David. This belief drives The Charmery’s partnerships with local artists. Collaborations often arise from personal relationships or community events, allowing the shop to promote the work of those who contribute to Baltimore’s rich cultural tapestry.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Charmery adapted quickly. David recalled the need to “reinvent the business every three days.” They shifted from serving scoops to offering pints and pies, even launching a delivery service. “After putting the kids to bed, Laura and I would sit in our living room for hours labeling pints,” he shared. Their resilience and support for fellow local businesses, like La Cuchara and Clavel, played a crucial role in navigating those difficult times.

The Charmery has also cultivated a special relationship with students from Johns Hopkins University. “We love Hopkins students,” David stated. He noted that they explore the city in a way that fosters community engagement, especially during the colder winter months when the shop remains open with seasonal offerings like hot chocolate and house-made marshmallows.

With a diverse range of ice cream shops in Baltimore, David sees competition as an opportunity rather than a challenge. “It’s about staying true to who you are,” he explained. The Charmery’s core offerings include seven always-available flavors, with Maryland Mud being a top seller. “We always want a great vanilla, a great chocolate, a great chocolate chip,” he added, emphasizing the importance of comfort in their classic selections.

Looking toward the future, The Charmery has exciting plans, including sensory movie nights at their Union Collective location, where ice cream flavors will correspond with film themes. “Our Case Ball Drop on New Year’s Eve is always really special too,” David mentioned, highlighting the shop’s commitment to creating memorable experiences for the community.

Ultimately, David Alima hopes that visitors leave The Charmery with a sense of belonging and inspiration. “It’s special, and you don’t have to be perfect to start something,” he concluded. His journey from a young entrepreneur to the owner of a thriving ice cream shop exemplifies the power of dreams, creativity, and community support.
