BREAKING: Aroldis Chapman has made headlines with a shocking declaration about his relationship with the New York Yankees. In a fiery episode of the “Swing Completo” podcast, Chapman stated he would “retire on the spot” rather than return to the Bronx Bombers, emphasizing his disdain for the organization.
The 37-year-old pitcher, who recently revitalized his career as the closer for the Boston Red Sox, expressed his frustrations candidly. When asked about the possibility of rejoining the Yankees, Chapman responded without hesitation, “No way, not even dead.” He added, “If I were told that I was being traded to New York, I’d pack my things and go home. I’ll retire right on the spot if that happens. I’m not crazy. Never again.”
This dramatic pronouncement comes after a tumultuous relationship with the Yankees, where Chapman spent parts of seven seasons from 2016 to 2022. His tenure included three All-Star selections and significant contributions to the team during their postseason runs from 2017 to 2021. However, his final season with the Yankees in 2022 was marred by struggles, including a leg infection from a tattoo and being left off the roster for the American League Division Series.
“I dealt with a lot of disrespect [with the Yankees],” Chapman revealed. He noted that he felt the organization was looking for a way to part with him but hesitated on how to execute it. “I knew that they just wanted to find a way to get rid of me, but they didn’t know how. And I just dealt with it quietly, kept playing, and doing what I always do.”
Despite his conflict with the front office, Chapman clarified that he had good relationships with players and manager Aaron Boone. “I got along well with all the players,” he stated. “Never had a problem with anybody, even the manager. We’re friends and we talk and everything. The bosses are the ones who make those decisions.”
After leaving the Yankees, Chapman signed with the Kansas City Royals in January 2023. He later played with the Texas Rangers and the Pittsburgh Pirates before joining the Red Sox, where he has excelled this season, boasting a 1.17 ERA and 32 saves. The Red Sox rewarded him in August with a $13.3 million contract for 2026, including a vesting option for 2027.
Chapman’s performance highlights a significant resurgence as he ranks among the top closers in Major League Baseball, accumulating 367 career saves, the third-most among active players and 12th-most in MLB history.
This explosive revelation from Chapman underscores a deep-seated rivalry and personal conflict that will undoubtedly resonate with fans and analysts alike. As the baseball world reacts to his bold statements, it remains to be seen how this will impact his legacy and future within the sport.
