Women in Games has introduced a new manifesto aimed at addressing gender inequality in the global video games industry. The organization emphasizes a need for “rebalancing gender representation and fairness” as women comprise nearly half of all gamers, yet represent fewer than a third of the workforce in this influential sector.
The manifesto articulates a vision where equality is not merely aspirational but recognized as a strategic imperative for the future of gaming. According to the organization, the document outlines 14 “core reasons” that underscore the critical importance of empowering women in the field. These reasons directly connect inclusive game development to enhancing innovation, creativity, sustainability, and cultural impact.
Dr Marie-Claire Isaaman, CEO of Women in Games, stated, “Progress does not happen by accident – it happens when people come together with clarity, courage, and purpose.” She emphasized that the manifesto serves as a “living commitment” to ensure women are not only included in the gaming landscape but are also instrumental in shaping its future.
As the gaming industry prepares for advancements driven by artificial intelligence, virtual worlds, and the metaverse, the manifesto highlights who is involved in building these systems as a matter of significant consequence. Dr Isaaman added, “Fairness is not charity – it is strategy. When women thrive, the industry thrives. This Manifesto is an invitation to the entire ecosystem to build a fair playing field together.”
Women in Games invites stakeholders across the industry to engage with the manifesto, which is available for download on their website. The organization believes that adopting its principles is essential for fostering a more equitable, innovative, and sustainable gaming environment for all.
