The UK government has announced the establishment of a new Centre for AI Measurement, a significant step aimed at positioning the UK as a global leader in artificial intelligence. The initiative, backed by £10.5 million in government funding, will be led by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and is designed to foster collaboration among industry, startups, and researchers. Its primary goal is to develop scientifically rigorous standards for AI models.
The centre will provide a collaborative environment necessary for conducting research and will offer expertise to support the development and piloting of technical assurance tools. This effort is focused on expediting the market introduction of trustworthy AI assurance tools. As Kanishka Narayan, the AI Minister, stated, “Robust, trusted tools for assessing the safety and effectiveness of emerging AI systems are essential for businesses to deploy them with confidence.”
Advancing AI Standards and Assurance
Narayan emphasized that the centre represents a key aspect of the AI Opportunities Action Plan, which aims to unite various stakeholders to identify and mitigate risks associated with AI early in the development process. This approach is intended to accelerate AI adoption, ensuring that the UK maintains a competitive edge in cutting-edge AI innovations.
The establishment of the Centre for AI Measurement also aligns with NPL’s ongoing work in the area of trustworthy and safe artificial intelligence through its Life Cycle initiative. In addition to this new centre, NPL is a founding partner of the AI Standards Hub, which is dedicated to shaping global standards for AI technology.
According to Peter Thompson, CEO of NPL, the UK possesses world-class expertise in AI. He noted, “Through the creation of the Centre for AI Measurement, we aim to strengthen the UK’s leadership in developing and adopting secure and trustworthy AI.” Thompson also highlighted the centre’s role in developing and validating scientifically robust technical AI assurance capabilities, positioning it as an independent national resource that supports economic growth and national security.
Funding and Future Prospects
The announcement comes one year after the launch of the AI Opportunities Action Plan, with the government reporting that it has implemented three-quarters of the measures outlined in the plan. As part of this commitment, the government has established the Sovereign AI Unit, which has allocated up to £500 million to support UK AI companies.
Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, remarked, “We are ensuring that British researchers and entrepreneurs have the compute, capital and ecosystem they need to build world-class businesses here.” She further stated, “Our ambition is to make Britain the fastest adopting AI country in the G7.”
The creation of the Centre for AI Measurement signifies a concerted effort by the UK government to enhance its AI landscape, ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of technological advancement and innovation in artificial intelligence.
