Smart has announced the return of its iconic minicar with the introduction of the Smart #2, a two-seat electric vehicle (EV) set to launch in late 2026. Designed by Mercedes-Benz and manufactured in China, the new model aims to reclaim Smart’s roots in the minicar segment, which had shifted towards larger hatchbacks and crossovers in recent years.
The Smart #2 will be built on a completely new vehicle platform, distinct from the existing Smart models such as the #1, #3, and #5. According to Tong Xiangbei, the global CEO of Smart, developing a new model and architecture for a small car poses greater challenges than creating larger vehicles. This new architecture is specifically tailored for ultra-compact minicars, suggesting a focus on maximizing efficiency and maneuverability.
The first images released show a vehicle designed to fit comfortably in tight urban parking spaces, reinforcing the Smart brand’s legendary reputation for parkability. The silhouette of the #2 indicates it will closely resemble earlier Smart city cars, emphasizing its compact size and functionality.
While details remain limited, Smart has confirmed that the #2 is in the final design and testing phases. The company previously ventured into the electric market with the Smart Electric Drive, first introduced in 2007. Under its new Chinese ownership, Smart has transitioned to specializing in EVs, currently offering three models in the market.
Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming launch, concerns linger regarding the vehicle’s battery capacity. The final generation of the Smart Electric Drive featured a 16.5 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 58 miles on the EPA cycle. Given the compact design of the #2, it is anticipated that similar limitations may apply.
The new model will primarily target markets in Europe and China, with some availability in unspecified “global markets.” However, prospects for a return to the U.S. market appear unlikely, as the previous Smart models struggled to gain traction.
As Smart prepares to re-enter the minicar arena, EV enthusiasts and city dwellers in Europe can look forward to the Smart #2, a vehicle that promises to blend compact design with modern electric functionality. The launch signals a significant step in Smart’s evolution, aiming to reconnect with its original vision while adapting to current market demands.
