An innovative project has emerged that revives the nostalgic touch of the classic GameCube controller for modern gamers using the Nintendo Switch. After seven years of development, Dorison Hugo presents a new dock that allows users to connect GameCube controllers to the Switch, blending retro gaming with contemporary technology.
Hugo’s latest dock is not his first attempt at creating a Switch docking solution, but it incorporates several enhancements. One notable feature lets players use the Switch’s own screen instead of relying solely on a television display. Additionally, the dock includes a mechanical lock designed to prevent theft, adding a layer of security for users.
The standout element of this project lies in the modifications made to the original Switch docks. Hugo discovered that the standard Switch dock has enough internal space to accommodate four GameCube controller ports. To achieve this, he selected a compatible commercial adapter, opting for a third-party solution from Input Integrity after finding the Wii U branded adapter unsuitable.
Despite the tight fit within the dock, Hugo managed to make the necessary adjustments. He removed the ports from their original board and utilized simple connectors to streamline cable management. Creating a polished final product required precise cutting of the dock’s front panel. The modifications were secured using a combination of superglue, epoxy, and hot glue.
The recent release of the Switch 2 prompted Hugo to adapt his dock for this new console. While this iteration offers more room for cable management, fitting the GameCube ports necessitated further modifications. By trimming a few millimeters from the tops of the ports, he was able to create enough space, although this added complexity to achieving a professional appearance.
Connecting the adapter’s USB cable to the dock’s printed circuit board (PCB) presented another challenge, leading to the use of an additional USB cable. Despite these hurdles, both docks created by Hugo showcase an impressive quality that rivals original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards.
This project highlights the ongoing appeal of retro gaming while showcasing the creativity and resourcefulness of modern gamers. By merging old-school gaming hardware with new technology, Hugo has created a product that resonates with both nostalgia and contemporary gaming needs. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, such innovations remind enthusiasts of the rich history behind their favorite consoles.
