Meta has announced it will suspend teenagers’ access to its AI characters as it works on creating improved versions. This decision comes amid growing concerns about the mental health and safety implications for young users interacting with chatbots. The company confirmed the changes in a blog post on October 20, 2023, stating that access will be restricted until a new experience is ready for rollout.

The updated policy affects users who have registered with a teen birthday, as well as those who claim to be adults but are suspected to be teenagers based on Meta’s age prediction technology. The company’s move reflects a cautious approach as debates intensify regarding the influence of AI technology on youth.

Background on AI Interaction and Parental Controls

This decision follows an announcement made in October, where Meta revealed plans to introduce new parental controls. These tools would allow parents to supervise their children’s interactions with AI characters, including the option to fully restrict access. The company also mentioned that parents would receive insights into the topics discussed during AI conversations.

Although Meta initially pledged to launch these tools early in 2023, the timeline has shifted. In the recent announcement, the company emphasized that it is now developing a “new version” of its AI characters to provide a better experience for users. During this development phase, the decision to cut off access for teenagers is seen as a necessary step.

Concerns Over AI Safety and Youth Mental Health

The issue of teenage engagement with AI chatbots has sparked wider discussions about AI safety, particularly concerning what some experts term “AI psychosis.” This phenomenon refers to mental health challenges that may arise when individuals receive overly positive or sycophantic responses from AI, potentially leading to harmful delusional thinking. Tragically, there have been reports linking such interactions to several youth suicides.

The popularity of AI chatbots among teenagers cannot be overlooked. A survey indicated that one in five high school students in the United States reported having a romantic relationship with an AI. This statistic highlights the depth of engagement these young users have with artificial intelligence.

Meta’s policies have faced intense scrutiny, particularly following revelations from internal documents. These documents suggested that underage users could engage in “sensual” conversations with AI characters. Additionally, chatbots based on celebrities like John Cena have reportedly engaged in inappropriate discussions with users claiming to be minors.

Meta is not alone in facing criticism over its AI platforms. Character.AI, another chatbot service popular among teenagers, implemented a ban on minors last October after being sued by families. These families accused the platform’s chatbots of encouraging harmful behaviors in their children.

As Meta moves forward with its development plans, the company appears to be taking significant steps to address the safety concerns surrounding its AI products. The changes may set a precedent for how tech companies approach AI interactions with young users in the future.
