Apple has temporarily halted four recent iPhone software updates following reports of network connectivity issues affecting older devices. On March 11, 2024, the tech giant released its latest version, iOS 26.2.1, alongside updates to iOS 18, iOS 16, iOS 15, and iOS 12, which was rolled out for the first time since 2023. These updates aimed to ensure that iMessage and FaceTime services would remain functional on older iPhones beyond January 2027, when certain certificates were set to expire.
However, the updates have reportedly led to significant issues. According to a support document from the Australian telecommunications company Telstra, the new versions, particularly iOS 16.7.13, have caused some older Apple devices to lose connectivity to their network. This disruption includes the inability to make emergency calls to 000, Australia’s equivalent of 911 in the United States.
Telstra has advised users of affected devices, including the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, to refrain from installing the updates until the issue is resolved. The seriousness of losing access to emergency services has prompted swift action from both Telstra and Apple.
In response to the reports, Apple announced it had “paused” not only iOS 16.7.13 but also updates to iOS 18.7.4, iOS 15.8.6, and iOS 12.5.8. The company stated that it is currently investigating the root cause of the connectivity problems. While the details remain unclear, it has not been confirmed whether other networks outside Australia are experiencing similar issues.
Interestingly, Apple’s release notes for these updates indicated that they contained “no published CVE entries”, suggesting that they did not address any security vulnerabilities. This fact implies that halting the updates while the investigation is underway should not raise immediate security concerns. Nonetheless, the urgency of resolving the network connectivity issue is paramount, especially with the potential impact on emergency services.
As the investigation continues, users await further updates from Apple regarding the resumption of software updates for their devices. The company’s prompt response showcases its commitment to customer safety and service reliability, even amidst unexpected complications.
