The Victoria Youth Sports Complex hosted an exciting day of softball on March 14, 2024, as the Victoria East Softball Tournament kicked off. A total of 14 teams participated in the three-day event, showcasing local talent and fierce competition. Among the teams were Victoria East, Victoria West, St. Joseph, and several others, all vying for supremacy in the tournament.
Victoria West began the day with a strong performance, defeating St. Joseph 5-3 in a six-inning match. This marked St. Joseph’s first loss of the season. Victoria West fell behind early, trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning. However, they mounted an impressive comeback, scoring five runs in that same inning. A pivotal moment came when Abigayle Stephens hit a single to right field, driving in two runs and tying the game at 2-2. Following that, Elaiyna Martinez doubled to left field, bringing in two more runs. West concluded their rally when a passed ball allowed Martinez to score.
Despite a late effort from St. Joseph, who scored a run in the top of the sixth, they could not overcome West’s lead. Winning pitcher Ella Cuellar allowed only one earned run and struck out seven batters, while West’s offense totaled six hits compared to St. Joseph’s four.
In their second game of the day, Victoria West faced Needville and experienced a dramatic loss, falling 9-6 with a walk-off triple from Jojo Cantu in the bottom of the sixth inning. Starting pitcher Isabella Medina held her own, not allowing an earned run in three innings but ultimately took the loss in relief. Key contributions came from first baseman Keyanna Fillmore, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and left fielder Madisyn Saenz, who also had a strong showing with two hits and an RBI.
St. Joseph rebounded quickly after their initial defeat, delivering a dominating performance against Richmond Tomas, winning 15-0 in just three innings. The Lady Flyers unleashed their offense with four runs in the first inning, followed by nine in the second. The game ended under the 15-run mercy rule. Winning pitcher Natalie Lill allowed only one hit and struck out six batters.
Star shortstop Ava Martinez excelled at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two triples, an RBI, and three runs scored. Teammates Jazmyn Gamez and Azilee Leita also contributed significantly, each delivering two hits and two RBIs, helping St. Joseph achieve a season record of 11-1 going into their next match.
Victoria East also had a strong outing against El Campo, securing a 7-3 victory. The Lady Titans scored consistently, managing to cross the plate in five different innings. Aniya Franklin stood out with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in three RBIs, while leadoff hitter Rhaelyn Steen added another three hits and an RBI. Pitcher Julie Davila completed the game, allowing three earned runs and striking out four batters.
Despite their earlier success, Victoria East faced a setback in their second match against Columbus, narrowly losing 2-1. In a tightly contested game, East fell behind 2-0 but mounted a late comeback in the sixth inning. After Bella Hysquierdo reached base and stole second, she scored on a wild pitch, but the rally fell short as the game concluded with Ella Shannon stranded at second base. Starting pitcher Franklin, who struck out ten batters, suffered the loss despite her strong performance.
With the tournament continuing, teams are eager to secure victories and improve their standings. Victoria West will face Los Fresnos in their next match, while St. Joseph prepares to take on El Campo. The tournament promises more thrilling moments as these talented teams strive for victory on the field.
