The race for the College Football Playoff (CFP) is intensifying as teams like USC, Texas, and Michigan look to secure their positions. Following the latest CFP rankings, FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt evaluated the chances of these teams making the playoff, particularly focusing on how critical their upcoming games will be.
As it stands, the playoff landscape is becoming increasingly competitive. Klatt expressed skepticism regarding teams ranked below No. 10, specifically highlighting that 12th-ranked Utah and 14th-ranked Vanderbilt have limited potential due to their lack of significant victories this season. Meanwhile, teams like 11th-ranked BYU and 13th-ranked Miami remain in contention within their respective conference title races, complicating the playoff picture further.
Klatt noted that if Texas Tech were to perform well in the Big 12, it could potentially disrupt the playoff hopes of traditional powerhouses such as Notre Dame and Alabama. He stated, “If BYU continues to win and potentially win the Big 12, that would shift the conversation significantly.”
Assessing the Playoff Paths for Key Teams
Among the teams on the playoff bubble, Klatt specifically mentioned USC, Texas, and Michigan as having compelling cases. Each of these teams has pivotal matchups that could enhance their playoff prospects.
For USC, the upcoming game against No. 7 Oregon is particularly crucial. Klatt described this matchup as “a playoff game.” He emphasized that a victory for USC would not only improve their record to 9-2 but also provide a head-to-head win against Oregon, which could significantly elevate their standings in the rankings. He elaborated, “If USC wins, they could jump into the top 10, directly impacting Oregon’s position in the rankings.”
Klatt also pointed out that this victory would serve as a major boost, especially when compared to other teams like Notre Dame, who may struggle to match such a significant win. “Oregon would need some help if they were to lose this game,” he added, highlighting the implications for Oregon’s playoff ambitions.
Texas, however, faces a tougher road after dropping from No. 10 to No. 17 following a 35-10 loss to Georgia. Klatt suggested that this defeat could effectively eliminate the Longhorns from playoff contention. “A 9-3 record has never made it to the playoff,” he remarked, underscoring the historical precedent against teams with such a record.
Despite this, Klatt noted that a win over No. 3 Texas A&M could bolster Texas’ resume, giving them three victories against top-15 teams. Nonetheless, he remains unconvinced that this would be enough to overcome the challenges posed by teams like Alabama, currently holding the last at-large playoff spot.
Michigan’s Playoff Aspirations
The situation for Michigan also hinges on their upcoming clash with Ohio State. Klatt believes that a victory in this game would significantly enhance Michigan’s playoff credentials, especially given that it would represent the best win of the season. “If Michigan beats Ohio State, they would be 10-2, which puts them squarely in the playoff conversation,” he said.
He highlighted the potential scenarios involving Michigan and other teams like Notre Dame and Oklahoma, emphasizing that the Wolverines could benefit from their strong finish. “Winning against Ohio State could allow Michigan to surpass teams like Miami and Notre Dame in the rankings,” Klatt noted.
As the season progresses, the playoff race continues to tighten. With several key matchups on the horizon, teams like USC, Texas, and Michigan will need to capitalize on their opportunities to secure a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining who can claim a place in this competitive field.
