Texas A&M solidified its status as a formidable contender for the College Football Playoff with a convincing 38-17 victory over Missouri on November 4, 2023. The Aggies, ranked No. 3, improved their record to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), while Missouri fell to 6-3, with a 2-3 SEC record. Despite the impressive win, Texas A&M maintained its position in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 Poll.
The Aggies have emerged as serious contenders not only for a spot in the College Football Playoff but also for their first National Championship since 1939. This rise comes as a surprise to many, yet the team’s performance has generated significant excitement among the fan base. With three games remaining in the regular season, the focus remains on maintaining momentum and securing a spot in the playoffs.
Quarterback Marcel Reed played a pivotal role in the victory, completing 20 of 29 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He also contributed a critical 28-yard rush that helped seal the win. The Aggies’ air attack was bolstered by KC Concepcion, who recorded four receptions for 84 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown. The run game also surged in the second half, highlighted by sophomore running back Rueben Owens, who amassed 102 yards and a season-long 57-yard touchdown run.
Defensive Efforts and Player Highlights
While the Aggie defense allowed over 200 rushing yards, they effectively contained Missouri’s passing game. Freshman quarterback Matt Zollers struggled, managing only 77 yards through the air. The defensive unit disrupted Missouri’s offensive strategies throughout the match.
After the game, Pro Football Focus released its team grades, reflecting a well-rounded performance from Texas A&M. The standout player was safety Dalton Brooks, who excelled after a key 48-yard run on a fake punt play called by head coach Mike Elko. His performance earned him the highest offensive grade of the game. Running back EJ Smith, who rushed for 24 yards and a touchdown, also received recognition with a passing grade of 74.6, particularly excelling on third downs.
The Aggies’ offensive line played a crucial role in the victory, allowing only two pressures against a solid Missouri front. Three offensive linemen achieved pass-blocking grades of 80 or higher, contributing to Reed’s effective management of the game.
Defensive Grades and Areas for Improvement
On the defensive side, senior cornerback Will Lee III delivered an exceptional performance, yielding only one reception for 28 yards on five targets. Linebacker Daymion Sanford shone in his role, registering two pressures and a sack fumble, while Cashius Howell matched his efforts with two pressures and a sack against Missouri’s star left tackle Cayden Green.
Despite the strong defensive showing, the Aggies faced challenges, particularly in tackling. They missed 12 tackles during the game, a concern highlighted by the tackling grades released by Pro Football Focus. Star linebacker Taurean York struggled, finishing with a tackling grade of just 27.8. Overall, three defenders received tackling grades of 27 or worse, and five others fell within the 40-55 range, indicating areas that require attention as the season progresses.
As Texas A&M prepares for its upcoming games, maintaining focus and addressing defensive weaknesses will be crucial. The Aggies are poised to make a significant impact in the remainder of the season, with the potential to secure their place in history.
