Tewksbury and Lowell Clash in Anticipated High School Football Showdown

The highly anticipated matchup between Tewksbury High and Lowell High is set for September 29, 2023, at 7 p.m. at Doucette Field. Both teams enter this contest undefeated, each boasting a record of 2-0. Historically, Tewksbury has dominated this rivalry, winning the last four meetings by a total score of 139-34. However, this year’s clash promises to be significantly more competitive.

Brian Aylward, head coach of Tewksbury, acknowledges the talent and strength of Lowell’s squad. “They have as good personnel as anyone in the area. They are big up front, and they can move,” Aylward noted. He praised Lowell’s offensive capabilities, emphasizing that their diverse skill set makes them a formidable opponent. “They throw the ball well and they run the ball well,” he added, highlighting the need for his team to stay adaptable on defense.

Lowell, under the guidance of coach Scotty Boyle, comes into the game following victories over Westford Academy (24-14) and New Bedford (48-0). Key players for Lowell include quarterback Seth Ly, running back Joshua Amankwaah, and standout wide receivers Collin Christiansen and Ryan Conley, who collectively accounted for five touchdowns in their recent game. “That’s going to be a good challenge for our guys, and I think they are up for it,” Aylward stated.

On the other side, Lowell’s defense will need to contain Tewksbury’s sophomore quarterback Will Harrison, who has made a strong impression in his first two varsity starts. Harrison has completed 23 of 32 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns, while also contributing 138 rushing yards and two scores. His ability to perform under pressure will be crucial as Tewksbury aims for a strong showing against their rival.

Vikings Face Tough Test Against Catholic Memorial

In another notable game this Friday, the Nashoba Tech Vikings will face a significant challenge as they take on Catholic Memorial, regarded as one of the top teams in the state and a perennial powerhouse in Division 2. After a narrow loss to Stoneham, coach Danny Kelly expressed excitement about the upcoming game, stating, “We understand it’s going to be a tall task and our kids are excited.”

Catholic Memorial has demonstrated its strength by defeating St. Thomas Aquinas (35-7) and St. Francis (56-32) in previous matches. The Vikings will need to be at their best to compete with a team that has multiple players attracting attention from colleges, including offers from Boston College.

Other Games and Standout Performances

In addition to the highlighted matchups, there are several other games scheduled for Friday, including:

  • Ayer-Shirley (1-1) at David Prouty (2-0)
  • Shawsheen Tech (3-0) at Norwood (1-2)
  • Billerica (1-1) at Lawrence (1-1)

  • Wayland (0-3) at Westford (0-2)

On Saturday, Alvirne (0-3) will travel to Concord (1-2), while Pelham (3-0) is set to face Hollis-Brookline (0-3).

Noteworthy performances from the previous week include Jackson Gearin of Billerica, who led his team with 124 rushing yards without attempting a pass, and Mark Holleran of Wilmington, who completed 4 of 5 passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Wilmington’s defense also shone, allowing just 34 yards of offense and contributing to a win that could mark the program’s first 3-0 start since 2017.

As the season progresses, teams like Pelham continue to impress, outscoring opponents by a combined total of 150-15. Other teams, such as Tewksbury and Shawsheen Tech, remain in the spotlight as they vie for top positions in their respective divisions.

With the excitement of high school football in full swing, fans can look forward to a thrilling weekend of matchups that promise to showcase emerging talents and established programs alike.
