A new survey has unveiled the political affiliations of athletes across major professional sports leagues, providing insights into a topic often overlooked in sports discussions. Conducted by VoteHub, a platform that specializes in political analysis, the survey utilized publicly available voter registration records to compile data on players from five prominent leagues.
Though many fans prefer to separate sports from politics, interest in athletes’ political leanings persists. The analysis, which covers 1,506 active athletes for the 2024 season, offers an aggregate view of political tendencies without naming individual players.
Political Leanings by League
Among the leagues surveyed, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) exhibited the strongest Democratic affiliation, with 67.5% of players registered as Democrats. In contrast, 30.2% identified as independents, and only 2.3% registered as Republicans.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) presented a more balanced distribution. Here, 45.9% of players registered as independents, while 42.9% identified as Democrats. Republicans made up 10%, and 1.2% were affiliated with other parties.
Major League Baseball (MLB) showed a significant Republican lean, with 53.7% of its players registered as such. Independents accounted for 36.4%, while only 7.8% identified as Democrats, and 2.1% were affiliated with other parties.
The National Hockey League (NHL) presented a closer division, with 43.9% of players registered as Republicans and 48.6% as independents. Only 5.6% identified as Democrats, and 1.9% were affiliated with other parties.
The National Football League (NFL) displayed the most varied political affiliations. Here, 44.3% of players registered as independents, 34.3% as Democrats, and 20.2% as Republicans. Additionally, 1.2% were affiliated with other parties.
Analysis and Implications
In summarizing the findings, VoteHub noted that “mirroring broader patterns of political sorting in the United States, athletes in four of the five professional leagues appear to be embedded in environments dominated by similar political perspectives.” This observation highlights the potential influence of professional environments on athletes’ political affiliations.
The platform also cautioned that some athletes who registered as independents might have chosen this designation to maintain privacy regarding their actual political preferences, especially given their high-profile status.
VoteHub’s comprehensive analysis encompasses athletes from various states, including Alaska, Florida, New York, and California, among others. The findings reflect not only the political landscape of professional sports but also the broader societal trends shaping political affiliations across the United States.
As discussions around politics in sports evolve, this survey provides a valuable perspective on how athletes align themselves politically, potentially influencing fans’ perceptions and conversations surrounding sports and social issues.
