Former Eagles quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles has come to Patullo’s defense, suggesting that a shift in play-calling strategy could help improve the team’s performance.
On the podcast “The SZN with Nick Foles & Evan Moore,” Foles expressed his belief that Patullo should remain in his position. He emphasized the need for “micro-changes” rather than drastic measures. Foles believes that the key to enhancing the Eagles’ offense lies in Patullo returning to the coaching box during games, where he would have a clearer view of the field and defensive alignments.
Foles noted, “I don’t think Kevin needs to be fired. I think the answer right now is little micro-changes to make guys more comfortable in their position.” He elaborated that being on the sideline might cloud Patullo’s judgment, affecting his play-calling decisions. From the coaching box, he argues, Patullo could better see the evolving coverages and defensive structures.
Foles drew a parallel with Andy Reid, the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, who previously held the same position with the Eagles. According to Foles, Reid would meticulously prepare for games by visualizing play calls and using index cards to maintain a rhythm throughout the game. “Sometimes you have to take the emotion out of the game and just pull out an index card from your prep during the week,” Foles stated.
The Eagles’ offensive struggles are evident, as they ranked 24th in the NFL with an average of just 303.6 yards per game prior to a recent loss to the Chicago Bears. In that game, the Eagles managed to convert only four out of twelve third-down attempts and rushed for a mere 87 yards, highlighting the team’s inconsistency.
As the Eagles prepare for their next challenge on December 8, 2023, against the Los Angeles Chargers, it is clear that the team must explore new strategies to revitalize their offense. Whether or not Patullo adopts Foles’ suggestions, the Eagles will need to make significant adjustments to improve their standing in the league.
