Kendrick Perkins Analyzes Victor Wembanyama’s Struggles Against Lakers

Victor Wembanyama encountered significant challenges during the San Antonio Spurs’ recent game against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 10, 2024. After a stellar start to the season, the highly-touted rookie faced aggressive defensive strategies that limited his effectiveness on the court. NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins highlighted this moment as a crucial learning opportunity for the young player.

In the matchup against the Lakers, Wembanyama finished with 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. While these figures may seem respectable, they mask a more troubling performance. The 7-foot-2 forward shot just 35.7% from the field and committed 5 turnovers before fouling out of the game. It was evident that the Lakers, following the Phoenix Suns’ lead, effectively targeted Wembanyama with double teams, disrupting his usual rhythm.

Learning from Adversity

Perkins, along with fellow analysts Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye, viewed Wembanyama’s struggles as part of the natural progression for an emerging star. “This is part of growing pains,” Perkins remarked. He referenced the experiences of renowned players like Nikola Jokić and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who also faced similar challenges early in their careers. Perkins emphasized that all elite big men eventually learn to navigate double teams and adapt their game accordingly.

The Spurs coaching staff recognizes the need to adjust their approach to maximize Wembanyama’s offensive potential. In their recent game plan, they attempted to reduce his post touches—an area where he typically excels. Unfortunately, this strategy did not yield the desired results, as it played into the Lakers’ defensive game plan.

Wembanyama’s height and skill make him a formidable opponent in the post, which is why he is often the focus of double-team defenses. As he develops, the Spurs are keen to find solutions that will allow him to thrive without being stifled by opposing defenses.

The Need for Support

To facilitate Wembanyama’s growth, Perkins highlighted the importance of having a strong playmaker alongside him. “Wemby now needs someone to be able to set the table for him and get him the ball in the spots where he could be successful,” Perkins stated. He specifically pointed out that De’Aaron Fox, whom the Spurs acquired to bolster their roster, could play a vital role in this regard.

Fox is an All-NBA-caliber guard capable of demanding defensive attention, which would alleviate some pressure from Wembanyama. Although there is no confirmed timeline for Fox’s return from injury, his presence on the court is eagerly anticipated by Spurs fans.

In addition to Fox, young talents such as Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle show promise but have yet to reach a level where they can consistently draw the same level of attention from defenders. As the season progresses, the Spurs hope that Fox will return soon to provide Wembanyama with the support he needs to navigate the challenges of the NBA.

As Wembanyama continues to adapt and learn from his experiences, the Spurs organization remains committed to developing their young star into one of the league’s elite players. The journey may be fraught with challenges, but each game serves as a stepping stone in his evolution as a professional athlete.
