In a significant setback, the Holy Family Tigers saw their undefeated basketball season come to an end with a 63-51 loss against the defending league champions, the Horizon Hawks, on January 20, 2026. The defeat marks a critical juncture for the Tigers, who now hold a record of 11-1 overall and 3-1 in the Granite Peaks League (GPL).
Challenges Against Horizon’s Dominance
Facing a formidable opponent like Horizon, known for its strong roster and tactical gameplay, Holy Family coach Pete Villecco recognized the need for precise execution. “To go on the road and beat a good team like Horizon, you have to do a lot of little things at a high level,” Villecco stated. His team struggled to maintain the sharpness that had characterized their previous games.
Despite a solid offensive effort, the Tigers fell short in key defensive areas. Senior point guard Matthew Evans, who led the team with 12 points, emphasized the importance of rebounding and defense. “If we did that a little better today, we would’ve won,” he remarked, highlighting the areas that needed improvement.
Star Performers and Game Statistics
The Hawks’ standout player, Noah Sokolowski, showcased his skills with an impressive performance, scoring 20 points and securing a remarkable 30 rebounds. His ability to dominate the glass proved pivotal in the game. Additionally, Sokolowski was a significant factor in drawing fouls, converting 8 out of 14 free throw attempts, while Holy Family only managed 5 out of 7.
Villecco noted the difficulties his team faced in defending against Horizon’s aggressive play. “We had a hard time keeping them off the glass. We knew that would be a challenge. They shot 25 free throws to our 7,” he said, reflecting on the disparity that ultimately influenced the game’s outcome.
Looking ahead, Holy Family must regroup quickly as they prepare to host the Golden Eagles on Friday, January 24, 2026. This upcoming match holds significant implications for their league position. Last season, Holy Family defeated Frederick in a closely contested game that ended 56-43, indicating the potential for another tightly fought encounter.
With the loss to Horizon, the Tigers find themselves a game behind both the Hawks and Frederick, who are at the top of the standings with records of 11-3 and 10-4 respectively. As the season progresses, every game becomes increasingly crucial for Holy Family’s aspirations of claiming the league championship.
