A charity hockey tournament held from February 20 to 22 raised over $40,000 for Genesis House in Melbourne, Florida. The event, named Hockey Heroes for the Homeless, brought together athletes, celebrities, and community leaders to support homeless women and children.
Four teams participated in the tournament, including Viera, Capital Trusses, Stantec, and W+J Construction. One of the weekend’s highlights was an exciting game featuring the NHL Celebrity Alumni against the Florida Power and Light All Stars. This matchup attracted enthusiastic crowds and showcased both historical and contemporary hockey talent.
Community Engagement and Activities
Beyond the ice, the weekend offered various activities, allowing supporters to engage with the cause in multiple ways. Participants enjoyed a golf outing, dinners, a hot stove panel, and a watch party for the Men’s Olympic Gold Medal game. These activities fostered a sense of community and rallied support for the initiative.
The NHL Celebrity Alumni added star power to the event. Notable participants included Mike Krushelnyski, Stu Grimson, Andrew Cassels, and Darryl Shannon. Doug Flutie, the Heisman Trophy winner and former professional football player, also skated with Team Viera, enhancing the weekend’s appeal.
Todd J. Pokrywa, COO of the Real Estate Group at A. Duda and Sons, Inc. and President of The Viera Company, led Team Viera on the ice. He reflected on the event’s significance, stating, “Seeing neighbors, friends, business leaders, and hockey legends unite for families in need underscores the power of community.”
Support and Sponsorship
The event’s success relied heavily on the dedication of volunteers and officials, particularly Jon Jehrio and Cyndi Pokrywa, alongside referee Carlo Cannon and his officiating team, who ensured smooth gameplay.
Corporate partners also played a crucial role in the fundraiser’s impact. Title Sponsor Health First and All Star Game Sponsor Florida Power and Light were joined by several other sponsors, including FedEx, Phil Hogan, and CertainTeed, as well as numerous local businesses that supported the tournament and related events.
Homewood Suites by Hilton Viera served as the official event hotel, accommodating guests and participants throughout the weekend.
As the community came together, the message was clear: protecting and uplifting families and children in need remains a top priority on Florida’s Space Coast. The Hockey Heroes for the Homeless event successfully provided both an unforgettable weekend and vital support for Genesis House, demonstrating the collective power of generosity and community engagement.
