Hazleton Area Libraries Unveil Exciting Fall Programs and Events

The Hazleton area libraries are set to resume their regular schedules starting on **September 2, 2025**, with a variety of engaging programs designed for all ages. The Hazleton Area Public Library and its branches, including the Marian Sutherland Kirby Library and Weatherly Area Community Library, will host events ranging from educational workshops to family-friendly activities throughout the fall.

Upcoming Events at Hazleton Area Public Library

One highlight is the **Family Chess Night** scheduled for **September 3,** from **18:00 to 19:00**. This event invites children to enjoy a game of chess with peers, complete with instructional guides and beginner-friendly chess sets. Interested participants must register by contacting the youth services department beginning on **August 25**.

Following this, a **Walking Meditation** session led by licensed meditation guide **Sheila Dignazio** is planned for **September 6** from **13:00 to 14:00**. This program, taking place at the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails, encourages adults to engage in mindfulness while walking. Registration is required, and attendees are advised to dress comfortably.

For younger participants, **Family Storytime** will occur every Monday from **September 8** to **October 27**, offering stories, songs, and crafts aimed at children aged 3 to 5. Registration can be completed through the youth services department.

Teens can participate in a **Rock-Painting Pizza Party** on **September 8**, where they will create art using acrylic paints. This event is designed for students in grades six through twelve, with registration required to secure a spot.

On **September 9**, the library will host a **Homeschool Educational Birthday Program** from **13:00 to 14:00**. This interactive event will explore birthday celebrations from around the world, featuring cultural learning and activities for all ages. Registration is necessary, starting on **September 2**.

The library will also offer a **Voting Information Program** on **September 16** at **18:00**, in partnership with the League of Women Voters. Participants will learn how to make informed voting decisions and about the organization’s nonpartisan efforts. Voter registration forms will be available in both English and Spanish.

More Programs Across Local Libraries

The **Marian Sutherland Kirby Library** is hosting a workshop on **Working with Cut Flowers** on **September 10** at **18:00**. Led by **Sandy Visintainer**, a Penn State Master Gardener, this session will cover selecting garden sites, plant types, and preservation methods. Interested individuals should register by contacting the library.

Additionally, the **Socrates Café** at the Kirby Library invites new members to engage in thoughtful discussions every fourth Wednesday of the month, facilitated by **Steve Wallace**. This gathering emphasizes the exchange of ideas among diverse participants.

At the **Weatherly Area Community Library**, a presentation titled **”Kingdom of Coal, the Coxe Miners, and Sophia aka ‘The Angel of the Coal Fields’”** is scheduled for **September 7**. This event, presented by **Bryan Dunnigan** of the Sophia Coxe Memorial Foundation, requires prior registration by **September 5**.

On **October 4**, the Weatherly library will host its annual basket raffle and silent auction, featuring unique items created by local students. Community members are encouraged to contribute decorated wreaths for the auction, with details available at the library.

As libraries continue to serve as vital community hubs, these programs highlight their commitment to education, cultural engagement, and social interaction. Residents are encouraged to participate and take advantage of the diverse offerings available throughout the fall season.
