Grizzlies Suspend Ja Morant for One Game Following Conduct Issues

The Memphis Grizzlies have suspended star point guard Ja Morant for one game due to conduct considered detrimental to the team. This decision follows a tense exchange between Morant and first-year head coach Tuomas Iisalo after the Grizzlies’ 117-112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.

The confrontation reportedly occurred in front of the team, where Iisalo questioned Morant’s leadership and effort. Sources informed ESPN’s Shams Charania that Morant responded in a manner viewed as inappropriate and dismissive. Following the game, he managed only eight points, marking a season low, and recorded seven assists while shooting just 3-of-14 from the field.

In a postgame interview, Morant expressed frustration, stating, “According to, probably don’t play me, honestly. That’s basically what the message was. It’s cool.” He further deflected questions about his performance by suggesting reporters consult the coaching staff, leaving many to speculate about the underlying tensions within the team.

Morant’s average playing time has dipped to a career-low of 28.5 minutes over the first six games of the season. Iisalo, who succeeded Taylor Jenkins after his unexpected firing late last season, has faced scrutiny regarding the team’s dynamic. Jenkins’ dismissal was partly attributed to concerns that he had lost the locker room.

The Grizzlies organization has not publicly elaborated on the specifics of Morant’s conduct or the implications of the suspension. The situation highlights ongoing challenges as the team adjusts to a new coaching direction while also managing player performance and morale.

This suspension not only affects Morant’s immediate availability but may also influence the Grizzlies’ overall strategy as they navigate the early part of the season. It remains to be seen how this incident will impact team cohesion and performance moving forward.
