In a significant blow to the Milwaukee Bucks, star player Giannis Antetokounmpo announced that he expects to be sidelined for at least four to six weeks due to a right calf injury. The announcement came after the Bucks’ narrow 102-100 loss to the Denver Nuggets on January 20, 2024, where Antetokounmpo struggled with the injury throughout the game.
Antetokounmpo suffered the injury during the first quarter and briefly left the game for evaluation. He returned with a wrap around his calf but was noticeably limited. “I was feeling it for the majority of the game but did not want to stop playing,” he explained. “But at the end, I could not move anymore, so I had to stop.”
Injury Details and Team Impact
As the injury plagued him, Antetokounmpo managed to play 32 minutes, ending the game with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists. Despite his efforts, the Bucks fell short in their comeback attempt, leading to their fifth loss in the past six games. With a record of 18-26, the team currently sits in 11th place in the Eastern Conference standings, trailing the Atlanta Hawks by 2.5 games for the final play-in spot.
Bucks head coach Doc Rivers expressed concern over Antetokounmpo’s recurring calf issues. “This calf keeps coming up, and it’s concerning,” he said. “I’m not a doctor, but I’m smart enough to know that his calf keeps bothering him. It keeps happening, and that’s troublesome for all of us.” Antetokounmpo had previously missed three weeks in December due to a similar injury.
After the game, Antetokounmpo confirmed that he would undergo an MRI to assess the extent of the injury. “After the MRI, they will tell me, probably, I popped something in my calf on my soleus or something,” he remarked, drawing on his past experiences in the NBA.
Looking Ahead
The potential absence of Antetokounmpo poses a significant challenge for the Bucks, who have struggled without their leading player. This season, Milwaukee has managed just 3-11 in games where Antetokounmpo has not played. “I’m going to work my butt off to come back,” he vowed, indicating that he hopes to return by late February or early March. He emphasized the importance of the team’s performance during his recovery, stating, “Hopefully, the team will be in a place that we can at least make the play-in or the playoffs.”
As the Bucks navigate this challenging period, the team and its fans will be hoping for a swift recovery for their star player. The MRI results will provide a clearer picture of Antetokounmpo’s status and the Bucks’ strategy moving forward in the competitive NBA landscape.
