Cincinnati Reds Place Rookie Chase Burns on Injured List

The Cincinnati Reds have placed rookie right-hander Chase Burns on the 15-day injured list due to an elbow issue. The decision, announced on July 7, 2023, is retroactive to July 4. Burns has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 right flexor strain, which has raised concerns for the team’s pitching rotation.

Since his major league debut on June 24, Burns has struggled to find his footing, accumulating a record of 0-3 with a 5.24 ERA over eight starts. Despite his challenges, the 22-year-old has shown potential, striking out exactly 10 batters in four of his last five appearances. His season total now stands at 57 strikeouts in just 34 and one-third innings pitched.

The Reds selected Burns with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, recognizing his talent during his time at Wake Forest. The team viewed him as a key part of their future pitching strategy. In a corresponding move, Cincinnati recalled left-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa, aged 27, from Triple-A Louisville to bolster their bullpen during Burns’ recovery.

As the Reds navigate this setback, the focus will be on Burns’ rehabilitation and return to form. The franchise remains hopeful that he can regain his strength in time to contribute to the team’s efforts later in the season.
