Senior guard Chris Albano delivered a standout performance, scoring a career-high 41 points to lead Susan Wagner High School to an 89-72 victory over Erasmus Hall in a PSAL 4A Brooklyn-Staten Island division game on March 2, 2024. Albano’s impressive display included 16 field goals, with five coming from beyond the three-point line, showcasing his scoring prowess. His contributions were vital for the Falcons, particularly as they improved their overall record to 14-6 and 7-4 in league play.
Albano’s performance stood out as Charles Gambino added 16 points, while Clevi Hoxha and Darin Humes-James chipped in with 10 and 9 points respectively. The Falcons capitalized on their early lead, thanks to Albano’s 17 points and Humes-James’ contributions, which helped them hold a 41-34 advantage at halftime. Following the break, Albano continued his dominance, scoring an additional 24 points in the second half.
In a post-game statement, Susan Wagner head coach Danny Lanigan noted the team’s defensive struggles but praised Albano’s exceptional game. “We definitely weren’t our best defensively or on the boards,” he said. “But Albano had another monster game and we needed it because our other shooters couldn’t get much to fall.”
Petrides Panthers and Farrell Lions Secure Wins
Meanwhile, the Petrides Panthers also found success, with Daynell Rowland scoring a game-high 39 points in a 70-63 win against FDR. Rowland’s performance was especially noteworthy as he had been benched in the first quarter for missing practice. He made up for it by hitting six three-pointers and converting 9 of 12 free throws, marking the fifth time this season he scored over 30 points.
In another close matchup, the Farrell Lions narrowly defeated Fordham Prep 53-47. Ryan Hanley excelled for the Lions, scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while also blocking three shots. Hanley’s consistent scoring was pivotal for Farrell, who improved to 8-7 overall. His performance contrasted with that of Fordham’s Brian Kapfer, who led his team with 30 points.
The game was tightly contested, with Fordham tying the score at 47 late in the fourth quarter. However, Farrell closed out the game with a decisive 6-0 run, securing their victory.
SIA Tigers Maintain Perfect Record
On Staten Island, the SIA Tigers celebrated their 16-0 season with a commanding 70-48 win over Eagle Academy. Luke DeVito led the Tigers with 22 points, including two three-pointers, as they continued their best start in school history. The Tigers’ defense played a crucial role in the victory, particularly during a decisive 10-0 run in the second quarter that established a comfortable lead.
Head coach Mike Mazella emphasized the importance of the team’s defensive efforts and acknowledged the challenges posed by a demanding schedule, which included five games in eight days. “Our defense led to that run we had in the second quarter and helped put us in control,” he remarked.
As the season progresses, the Tigers prepare for an important matchup against Dwight, another team competing for the top spot in the ACIS standings. With SIA holding a perfect record and looking to maintain their momentum, the upcoming game promises to be a competitive affair.
In junior varsity action, Susan Wagner also secured a close victory over Achievement First, winning 39-35. Jayden Acea led the Falcons with 15 points as the team rallied in the second half to clinch the win.
These performances highlight the intensity and excitement of high school basketball across the region, with players making significant impacts on their teams as the season approaches its final stretch.
