Chiefs Analyst Defends Patrick Mahomes Amid Photo Criticism

Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, faced backlash recently due to a photo posted on July 4, where some critics questioned his physical fitness and dedication to preparation for the upcoming season. As the Chiefs eye a historic championship three-peat heading into Super Bowl LIX, the scrutiny highlights how a single Super Bowl win can significantly shape a player’s public perception.

Kansas City sports radio host Cole DeRuse took to his podcast, “How Bout Those Chiefs,” to address the criticism aimed at Mahomes. He dismissed claims that a lack of visible muscle definition in the photo could signify a lack of commitment. “Six-pack abs automatically mean Super Bowl wins? No. That’s not how that works,” DeRuse stated emphatically. He argued that questioning Mahomes’ work ethic based on a holiday photo is both “ridiculous” and “unwarranted.”

DeRuse pointed out Mahomes’ impressive track record, noting that he has achieved more wins than any other quarterback in his first eight seasons. He is the only quarterback, aside from Tom Brady, to surpass 100 career victories in that timeframe. With multiple AFC Championships and Lombardi Trophies under his belt, DeRuse questioned the rationale behind tearing down a player who has made significant contributions to the city of Kansas City.

“As a starter since 2018, how many playoff wins, how many Super Bowl appearances, how many Super Bowl wins, how many MVPs?” DeRuse asked. “Why do we tear down the people who have done the most for the city from a sports standpoint? He’s done everything that’s been asked of him. Has he been perfect every game? No. But who is?”

Despite the external noise, Mahomes appears unfazed. During a recent interview on the Up & Adams Show, he expressed his eagerness to return to the field. “I feel like I’ve had to sit back and just listen to people talk and talk and I’m like, ‘Let’s just play football and just handle it all out there,’” Mahomes remarked. His attitude suggests he is focused on proving himself once again, especially following the lopsided loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the previous Super Bowl.

As the 2025 regular season approaches, Mahomes is determined to demonstrate that he can extend the Chiefs’ dynasty. His confidence during interviews indicates that fans and analysts alike should not underestimate his capabilities or those of the Chiefs. The upcoming season promises to be a critical chapter in Mahomes’ already illustrious career, and the scrutiny surrounding him may only serve to fuel his performance on the field.
