The Chico State men’s and women’s basketball teams achieved thrilling victories over Cal State Los Angeles on December 1, 2023, at Acker Gym in Chico. The women’s team improved its record to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with a 60-57 win, while the men’s team edged out their opponents with a 70-69 score.
In the women’s game, the Wildcats faced an early deficit, trailing 9-2 just two minutes into the match. However, the team quickly regrouped, launching a run that gave them a 13-12 lead with 2:57 left in the first quarter. They held onto that lead until midway through the third quarter when Cal State L.A. took a 53-46 advantage heading into the final period.
Chico State rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring L.A. 14-4 to claim victory. Madison Parry was the standout performer for the Wildcats, contributing 21 points and 12 rebounds. Nseije Ortiz supported with 12 points, while Meadow Aragon added nine points and collected 12 rebounds. As a team, the Wildcats dominated the boards, out-rebounding L.A. 45-30.
The women’s team will next face Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
In the men’s matchup, Chico State overcame a halftime deficit to secure a dramatic victory. The Wildcats trailed 45-38 at the break but fought back, outscoring Cal State L.A. 32-24 in the second half. The decisive moment came when Jeremiah Dargan made a layup with just nine seconds remaining, sealing the win for Chico State.
Dargan led the scoring with 23 points, while Chris Holley contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Cortevious Taylor also made a significant impact, recording 11 points and 11 rebounds. With this win, the men’s team improved to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in CCAA play.
The men’s team will also compete against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m. on Saturday, looking to build on their recent success. Both teams’ performances showcased their resilience and determination, promising an exciting season ahead for Chico State basketball.
